Re: '76 4001 Pickup Rewind/Harness Setup and Repair
Thank you so much for your informative reply. Based on what you're saying, it seems that overwinding with higher value pots kinda cancels each other out tonally. I guess I was looking to get the harness back to stock specs with a few tweaks. I've wired harnesses in the past with 250k volumes and 500...

'76 4001 Pickup Rewind/Harness Setup and Repair
Hey y'all. Just want to get your thoughts on what I'm thinking about doing here with my '76 4001's pickups and harness setup. Over the years, I've done some experimenting with different pickups (humbuckers from JBE and also Creamery) and different wiring harness configurations and pot values. I've e...

Re: 1972 4001s project advice
I have the hipshot HB5's on my 4003 in black and they look fantastic and function perfectly. I needed to specify that I wanted the "short pegs", although that might be standard now. I would also ask if you can get both sizes of bushing as it may be difficult to be 100% certain they’ll fit ...

Re: 4003 Montezuma AmberGlo Ric Bass
Lol. Well shooooot. I love my 2018 4003 Montezuma AmberGlo from Wildwood, but these with flame maple, single truss rod and new bridge.... daaaaamn fine piece of work. These are about $6k more, though... be lying if I said I wouldn't have laid down the dough for one of these if I didn't already have ...

Rickenbacker 94550 Vintage Bass Case - My experience
I just posted this same topic on Talkbass, but I thought it might be helpful to present it here as well. I know there have been various postings regarding this case in a few different forums over the years, but I thought I would just share my experience (just acquired from Musician's Friend) to help...

Re: 4003 Hipshot Bridge replacement advice please.
I have a brass one. Love it. Drops in easily. Hefty so it def helps offset the neck dive a bit. Looks great (mine is black to match all the other black hardware). In terms of tone, to my ears, I would say that it adds a bit of sustain, but I don’t hear a difference in brightness, really.

Re: Ultralite tuners for a 4003s - am I missing something?
Interesting, well Hipshot used to actually sell and market Rick specific replacement tuners. It looks like they no longer do that. I agree on the reamer, I recently got a nice cheap one at Harbor Freight that works great. Much easier and safer than trying to drill them out. Also on their site I see...

Re: A bit rough around (some) edges...is this normal?
I’ve decided to let it pass and focus on enjoying the bass. The finish is not flawless but I can overlook it. Not worth it to me to fight Rickenbacker about this. Same situation with my '18 Ric Special Edition Montezuma Amberglo, and this is what I decided as well. The finish defects were apparent ...

Re: Horrible A String Rattle - tried everything
The nut could very well be the source of the problem. The E and A nut slots seem to have been cut so low that the strings kinda sink in. I think it’s pretty clear that the string is vibrating on the frets, from what I observe I’ve tried many different strings. The saddle issue could be a strong infl...

Re: Horrible A String Rattle - tried everything
This is very interesting and worth a look/attempt.
Could the improper seating on the saddle in this manner cause rattle on the frets as well?
At the moment, it's apparent that the string is rattling on the strings. No question.
Thank you for your response.

Horrible A String Rattle - tried everything
Brand new 4003 The A string only (open and first few frets) rattles horribly and is unexplainable. Here's what I've tried: Nut height - not low - about .006 - was higher with same rattle Truss Rod/Relief - .004 bass side; .003 treble - was set up with much more relief with same rattle; various level...

4001 Neck Construction Variations/Relief
I realize that there are countless threads regarding neck relief, but I have a few more points of interest regarding the neck construction variations of these basses during this time period. Mine is a '76. Understanding that Ric necks are designed to be set up dead flat or at least close to it, I'm ...

4001 Truss Rods - Vinyl Tape
Hi. I just placed strips of vinyl tape (electrical) between the truss rods, top and bottom as many forum entries here have indicated as standard for these rods. I was just wondering how this is effective in preventing rattle. The tape doesn't appear to be thick enough to actually make a difference. ...

Re: So... are my truss rods totally f**ked?
I was able to unscrew the nuts (with great difficulty) and remove the small plate. As you can see, the left truss end rod is bent down considerably, which made it more difficult to remove the nut (the trench I dug underneath it is a strong indicator of this). While I was attempting bend up the left ...

Re: So... are my truss rods totally f**ked?
Appreciate the response. Obviously my post was a result of immediate hysteria after botching the job. After a bit of time to settle, I came to the conclusion that I'd have to remove the truss rods and reshape them at the ends. Still an extreme measure I think, which is why I'm even more grateful for...
