Re: Push/pull pot on 4001
I'm looking for a definitive answer -- will that fit into a thin profile axe like a 4001, an SG, a Firebird, etc.? I vastly prefer parallel humbucking to split coil and there are a ton of thin Gibsons in need.

Re: Lightweight tuners?
I put them on my bass. At the time, Hipshot was having some quality issues, so I went through 3 sets. They were very nice about it and I only paid for the original set...and yeah, I drilled them out. The Titans were shot...really shot.

Re: Cleaning a Plain Unfinished Maple Fretboard?
Naptha is good for cleaning raw wood, if that's really what you have. Also, there is steel wool finer than 0000. It's easier to work with than 2000 w&d imo. I forget what it is called. I got some at a Rockler.

Re: DR Hi-Beams
I use a .040 to .095 set of HI-Beams. I might try .040 to .100 next time. I don't think they're as bright as Rotosound. They don't seem to be eating the frets either. I leave them on a long time. hth

Re: New Treble Pup Bezel?
If you've been around a long time, you'll recognize my bass. I owe an updated pic...neck pickup by Silvio, Hipshot A bridge, diy thumbrest and the bezel I had done at a machine shop in 1983. The up/down mechanism is hidden by the G&L HB pickup.

Does it seem to be high quality or kind of cheap? I could see it coming off of an Asian knockoff from 70's. It's hard to tell.

I had a tuner by 1977...just saying. Great feel though.

I'm in the same boat -- where did you find decent pictures of the MMT era paint job?

Another DR Hi Beam fan. I don't change them very often. Toaster in the neck position. hth

Re: Can a 4003 truly sound like a 4001?
I suppose a complete pickup, harness and tone/volume control swap would go a long way to getting the 4001 sound, but would be quite a costly exercise! You won't need the wiring changed and I wouldn't mess with the pots at first...you can bump up the values later if you think it's too dark. I bought...

Re: Quick String Tension Query
I think the tension is dependent on the core diameter, not the finished string diameter....so kind of impossible to know unless the manufacturers spec it.

Re: Replacement Bridges - Alternatives?
I haven't seen anything better than the Hipshot. I had the Leo Quan part and replaced it with the normal Hipshot A style before the Ric one was available. It mounts flush. (I had to make a maple filler piece.) I bought it from Stew-Mac. I think they come in aluminum or brass and I ended up with whi...

Re: Ric pickups in other form factors?
Sure, you can buy Rickenbacker pickups all over the place and i've seen custom builds that use them, but Rickenbacker making toaster tops that fit in Gibsons or Fenders dosen't seem likely to happen. That's hardly what I was suggesting...or more like who I would expect to do it. I have a P90...

Re: Ric pickups in other form factors?
The simple answer would be that Rickenbacker wants their pickups used in their guitars. I know he goes after manufacturers over various trademark issues, however, you can't stop someone from using specific magnets in a certain configuration, and so much Xga formvar. I thought Lollar got pressed bec...
