These are the old style rods ....the 1950's to 1985 era rods .

The new rods are a single rod .

The single rods are in the 4003 basses that have been made since about 1990 .There ARE two of these single rods per neck as is the standard with the exception of a couple of guitar models .

You will need to play with the mid and bass knob to get the 'tone' . Set ...

IN the grain on the back of the neck , are there 'islands' of dark grain lines ? these look like a sort of circle in the dark grain ....

if there are ... that is a problem . THAT is why the neck would not 'function' up to standard .

LOosen the strings up to slack . Then take the neck and place it on a table with a stack of phone books under the neck for support ...about mid-point . Now ...tighten the rods up . Water Displacment #40 is nice cutting fluid for aluminum .... in the future use some oil , something like sewing machin...

The body CAN be salvaged ... but you will definately need to wet out the top and heat it . I do like Dale's idea of cutting off the top .... a Bridgeport mill would do it nicely . Take off 1/4" ... but not before you make an MDF templete with a 1/4" bottom bearing bit . This allows you to ...

And the cost of importing strings that are wound counter clock wise from Australia .. bloody ridiculous ! I'l continue to use my clockwise wound strings . Looking for more bottom end with those down under strings is futile ..just because they ARE lower made does not equate to low sustaining booming ...

I was responding to John Hall's privious comment ..... "In fact, that's exactly what I have been considering for this guitar, a wood tailpiece. Ebony would be a problem, however, given the C.I.T.E.S treaty and something like Madagascar Rosewood might be more sonically appropriate ." An ans...
