Re: 4003S mono wiring

Also, so for the delay in returning to this thread, but we've had some major flooding here where I live. Freeway closed in both directions, gasoline rationing because there's no movement of fuel trucks etc. Just crazy.

Re: 4003S mono wiring

Something just occured to me. Although the main harness is the same in mono and stereo Ricks, when in mono, there is a jumper wire between the C3 lugs of both volume pots that connects them in series to the output jack. When you have Rick-O-Sound, that wire isn't there. Instead you have separate sh...

Re: 4003S mono wiring

Thank you for the replies. I pretty much figured that the wiring would be the same as Dane has said. But I can't account for the unique behaviour of the 4003S bass vs. the two stereo models. One of them in particular has a very low output neck pickup compared to the bridge. Or conversely, an extra j...

4003S mono wiring

I have three recent basses. Two 4003 models and a 4003S. All were built around 2015-2017. I'll also mention that I have a 1979 4001 and have been playing Rics since my first mapleglo in 1975 so I'm fairly familiar with them. Back in the 70's I discovered that the bridge pickup sounded slightly bette...

Re: Pickguards from the "Ric" Boutique

Ya, thanks Dane. I think reshaping the existing potato guard is a good option. Back in the 70's I actually made a new guard for my '75 Mapleglo from a blank sheet of black plexi. I don't have a drum sander or even a dremel but I thought I might be able to re-shape it by hand like I did back in the d...

Re: Pickguards from the "Ric" Boutique

Yes, the screw holes not lining up is almost certain. I can fill those and start new ones for the replacement as the previous holes will be unseen. I've already spoken with Tony at Pickguardian and the surest way to get a guard with perfect hole alignment is to send him my 2013 "potato" gu...

Pickguards from the "Ric" Boutique

I just bought a 2013 Ruby 4003 with the ugly as sin "potato" double-hump excuse for a pickguard. The Ric online store "boutique" section shows the replacement pickguard shape as that same abomination as previously described. But the newer basses since around 2015 have returned to...

Re: I am surprised at the strict Ric warranty stringset term

Right. As long as it comes from one of the "gurus" it's sage wisdom and advice. I did say "To each his own". Aaannd.... YMMV. So like most forums, all that matters is that ya post what everyone wants to hear and confirm the current choices of the day with glowing reviews. So here...

Re: I am surprised at the strict Ric warranty stringset term

To each his own but personally, I have no use for flatwound strings. Or any other ground/half/pressure/tape whatever strings. To me they just sound like I'm buying a set of dead strings right out of the package. I started playing bass in the early seventies and had my first Ric by around '76. I've p...

Re: I am surprised at the strict Ric warranty stringset term

And for even more string gauge enjoyment, I ordered 12 sets of bulk strings in the factory specified gauges of 45-55-75-105 for my brand new 2017 4003S. I've used GHS Bass Boomers 45-105 for over 20 years so I don't really enjoy the lighter A and D of the Ric supplied set. But in an effort to mainta...

Re: What kind of bass amp do you use with your Rickenbacker?

Hiwatt DR103, Hiwatt DR504 and single 15 cabs with JBL E140's. I don't run stereo as I've never liked the sound of it. I prefer to have the same pickup blend going to both amps by using a splitter that has a transformer iso and phase reverse switch phase switch (if needed). The 100 watt amp runs cle...

Re: String gauges....again.

Understood. Perhaps not the best question as no one can really speak to Ric's policies but them. So leaving the warranty issue aside, do any fellow forum members who own the recent iterations of 4003S models use GHS M3045 Bass Boomers (45-65-85-105) ? If so, how are they holding up after widening th...

String gauges....again.

I've been using GHS Bass Boomers M3045 (45-65-85-105) for over 30 years and on my '79 4001 for at least the last 20. No issues, completely stable. I'm now the owner of a brand new FireGlo 4003S made in May of 2017 :D . So has anyone had any issues with the GHS 45-105's on their new Rics? I gotta say...

Re: Recent late model pickguard shape

I guess what I was really getting at was that it's ugly, and unless it's absolutely necessary to cover a control cavity that is larger than it used to be, it's an unnecessary change. I'm not sure why the screw hole placement would be an issue as the rest of the pickguard appears to be unchanged, and...

Re: Recent late model pickguard shape

Yes, but on many of the much older Rics the knobs were aligned straight (proportionally) like the newer versions, yet did not have the goofy pickguards. The Squire model and V63's and S's have straight control layouts but do not have the weird pickguards so I must ask... has anyone with a new model ...
