If the previous Owner didn't take too much finish off, it may be possible to buff it back to gloss... Yes, this is probably the first thing to try. If you can, have that done by an experienced refinisher to ensure a good, even gloss, and to not burn through the finish. I think trying to buff it out...

It looks like the whole bass has a matte/satin finish to it. It's not a satin finish (I almost wish it was), what the previous owner seems to have done is, remove the varnish from the top of the fretboard, and rub the body down with a brillo pad, it's beyond belief that such a sought after model co...
