Re: A Subtle Change: A Comparison of Two 480 Necks

In my experience, the necks are not glued in. I have two 480s and a 481 and none of them are glued.

Re: Variances in 320/325 Scale Lengths

The fret positioning is relatively easy with regard to the math involved (don't need no stinkin' java applet to calculate the 12th root of two, not to mention Stew-Mac having a wonderful calculator right on their website). And as an added bonus, I have access to a small CNC machine that could make t...

Re: Variances in 320/325 Scale Lengths

Well at least I'm happy to learn that I'm not suffering from a brain cell anomaly (or should I say yet another brain cell anomaly). It does leave me in a bit of a quandary, though, with regard to some work I"m doing on my '81. The guitar is in need of not only new frets, but there is significan...

Variances in 320/325 Scale Lengths

I could swear I've seen this topic already addressed in the forum, but no amount of searching will yield the answer. I have both a 1981 model 320, and a 325JL made in 1990. They each measure exactly 10.5" from the nut to the 12th fret, implying a 21" scale length (and yes, I'm measuring fr...

Re: MARF IV Photos

Thanks for all the positive comments on my Sea Green 620. Sea Green is a "love/hate" thing. Put me down for "love"!! Kudos to Chris & Shelby, Darryl Turner and anyone else involved in MARF IV for sponsoring such a wonderful gathering. Kudos as well to all the "Rick Peopl...

Re: MARF IV (Mid-Atlantic RIC Fest)

I have two "Royal Pains" in my life and this is one of them - figuring out which of my beautiful Ricks to leave at home for these MARFs. The other is figuring out which great Beatles songs to leave out of a show with my Beatles cover band. Can't bring 'em all, can't play 'em all. I'll defi...

Re: Newbie from Loudoun County, VA here!

I'm from rural, eastern PA, but I have a business client I visit regularly in Middleberg. He also lives right there in Loudon County. Beautiful area. I was disappointed to learn on my last visit that Middleburg's famous "Coach Stop" restaurant closed down. Welcome to the forum. I, too, am ...

Rickenbacker Neck Angles

Since the 480 guitars seem to be all the rage right now, let me weigh in with something I just noticed about my example (an early 1973). I disassembled my guitar immediately upon receipt to begin a looooonng restoration process. I never noticed, until I bolted the neck on recently, that the neck is ...

Re: 'New' Guitar: 1980 Rickenbacker 480

That makes sense. I told "spike" in a private e-mail a few weeks ago that I would gladly make one for him, as I'm in the process of making one for myself. Fortunately, I anticipated the variations you mention and advised he make a tracing before I cut any holes. Rick guards are fairly easy...

Re: 'New' Guitar: 1980 Rickenbacker 480

As for pickguards, Pickguardian makes them for the 480. I don't think Pickguardian makes anything for the 480 or 481. The guitars are listed on their website, but there's no link to a stock guard. Of course, I'm sure for a price they could be persuaded, but it doesn't seem our favorite guitars are ...

Re: Vintage Pickups: Long pole? Short pole? None?

Interesting. What I'm really curious about is the change that occurred in the mid 60s, when they made the poles shorter on the underside of the neck pickup, so that they don't have to route the body in a weak point. That's why some of the earlier 60s guitars have bad neck angles, because of that st...

Re: bridge saddles

Correct me if I'm missing something obvious here, but doesn't Michael's bridge look like a standard Rick bridge, already drilled for the individual saddles & adjustment screws? If that's the case, all you have to do is order up six screws and saddles from Rick. If you want to go with the modern ...

Re: Removing Scratches From A White Pickguard?

Well... it's amazing how quickly your perspective on something can change. Today I removed everything from the pickguard and completely pulled it for the first time, to really see the extent of the damage. The plastic around the neck pickup has been mis-shapen pretty badly, and there's a rather lar...

Re: 'New' Guitar: 1980 Rickenbacker 480

I posted this in my thread about the pickguard but i've run into a bit of a problem recently. I pulled it completely out from the body today and removed all the electronics for the first time, it's in a fair bit worse shape than I origionaly thought. There's two pretty bad cracks on the underside f...

Re: 'New' Guitar: 1980 Rickenbacker 480

The only complaint I ever had with the guitar was the Bolt On Neck, and that's really only because I 'grew up' on Gibsons which all had set-necks. Of course, at the same time, you don't see people complaining about Strat's or Tele's necks which are argueablly the most popular and reconizable electr...
