When we first started going that route I used my GK MB500 as my DI. It was fine but I was running away from GK back to Fender Bass Amps.
The WA is a good option if you are used to that tone.

Re: DI boxes
I use the MXR M80 Bass DI primarily for all my basses. I had a Sansamp bass DI but didn’t really care for it. The other one that I used from time to time is the old Countryman Type 85. It is active but it does recreate an amazingly clean tone.

I have seen a few on Guitar Centers used site within the 2200-3000 range. I have ordered several guitars from their used site without disappointment. They do have a 45 day guarantee that if you don’t like it, just take it back. You lose your shipping fee but get the cost of the instrument back.

Re: McCartney - strings on Rain?
The thing with the TI's is that they never die. I've had a set on my 4001c64s from 2006 up till 2016. Never changed them. They seemed to get better with age. So really 10 years with a set of string is pretty damn good. They were 65.00 at the time when I bought them so they were a great investment. ...

Re: McCartney - strings on Rain?
Have you paid attention to his jazz bass on the White Album? Sounds like he’s hitting his strings with a wet rag. So THAT's the trick! Thank you!! (I love all the White Album bass sounds.) I do too. Very great tones (unique with the Jazz). IMO his 4001S outshines the JB and John/George's playing on...

Re: McCartney - strings on Rain?
You could use TI flats or if you can grab some Optima 4440’s. The Optimas are pretty similar to the original Maximas but that’s always debateable. Either or you can’t go wrong. I doubt Paul really had the strings changed anyways. Have you paid attention to his jazz bass on the White Album? Sounds li...

Re: Finest set of roundwounds available today?
I've been using Ernie Ball SuperSlinkys on my non Rick basses. I love them. I used to use D'Addario XL's but they go dead to quick for my taste. I find EB strings to get better as they break in.

Re: Optima 24 Karat strings
I run the Optima 4440 on my 4001c64s. It has that dirtiness to it ala Wings Over America era McCartney...great strings.

Re: Was your Ric bass shipped or bought in store?
I bought my first Rick used back in 1991. It was a 1975 4001 white with black pickguard/binding from a small store.
My new Ricks (4001c64s, 4003 Blueburst, 4003 FG, 4003W, 4003S FG) I ordered from my local Rick dealer.

Sad thing is, it's paid for, I installed it and from afar it looks pretty damn good. Up close, you can see the grain through it. Oh well. It's getting gigged regularly so..

Fender MIM 70's bass neck
So, I ordered a MIM 70's Jazz Bass neck for my 66 tribute project. (I wanted the block inlay and bound neck look). When I unpackaged it, I noticed something interesting. The 'block inlays' were screened/painted on. I am disappointed. I thought they would at least put cheap plastic in the inlays. I l...

The Hipshot Company
I have to give a shout out to Hipshot Products. I'm giving my 2012 MIM Fender Jazz Bass a 1966 make over with block inlays (okay, the newer MIM 70's block inlay necks seem to be screenings of block inlay). Seeing that Hipshot sells a Lollypop style tuner for Fender for their MIJ series from the mid ...

Epiphone EJ-160E
I have acquired the new Epi EJ-160E (Not the Lennon signature) and I would like to know what strings to use on it that John/George used on theirs back in the day. Were they Pyramids flats?
