Re: Were Toaster Neck Pickups on 60s Basses Long or Short Po
I took my Lollar apart and adjusted it, no problem--twice. Just be REAL careful with the wiring and try to not let the magnets hit each other at all. I used a metal string radius gauge across the tops of the pole screws to make the initial adjustment, after setting up the saddles, string height and ...

Re: Question
The route I made in my 2018 4003 for a Toaster pickup. I left a 'shelf' and the pickup fits snugly.

Re: V68 (ish)
The Lollar was purchased in mid-2017. The horseshoes are solid. It's an amazing pickup--as well it should be for the price! I purchased two of these Limited edition basses over time. The first one was problematic, but the second was really nice and never had a problem. The differences between the ne...

Re: V68 (ish)
Limited Edition Bass. I had neck issues and the factory fret work was quite poor. There was a lot to work with, so I was able to sort it all out myself. I routed the body to move the neck pickup. Changes were done over 3 years ago and the bass has been the most stable Rickenbacker I have ever owned....

Re: NBD Rickenbacker 4003 Satin AutumnGlo
My take on a 'v68 based on an '18 AMB using a Lollar Horseshoe and a vintage spec harness from Dane. I used a Pickguardian pickguard, but will someday get a custom one done with a more accurate vintage control layout and shape. I've made an earlier style treble pickup surround that I'll someday inst...

Re: 1984 V63 Magnetic Horseshoe Pickup Question
I put a 'step' into the route so that it's down .22" from the face, but still .263" from the bottom of the pocket. neck_pocket_route.jpg The amount of material removed was just enough to clear the Toaster cover and back plate, minus the front 2 edge pickup cover screws. bass_toaster_backsi...

Re: 1984 V63 Magnetic Horseshoe Pickup Question
I routed the neck pocket to move the Toaster to the 1/2" position from the end of the neck and installed a Lollar Horseshoe pickup into the original pickup surround in my '18 4003 and it did increase the weight. There's a sticker on the outside of the case that indicates the original weight of ...

Re: NBD
You will likely have to file the 'A' and 'D' string slots in the nut, so line up some files for the setup work. Sounds like a nice score. Congrats!

Re: Rickenbacker bass neck - Right amount of relief
I bought two 4003 AMB CB VP basses from Wildwood last summer, about a month apart. These are limited editions, 15 unit run, but likely done in at least two batches. Wildwood does a pretty good setup and they did an initial one for each bass, per my request. I decided to play the first one and put th...

Is there a backstory to this that we are not aware of? I've been a customer of both companies and I find this generally troubling.

Re: Ric 4003S Matte Black finish issue
I think Rickenbacker had to change their paint years ago so they could continue to build instruments in California. I have a bass built in '97 and the finish is immaculate everywhere, including under the pick guard, treble pickup surround, truss rod cover, and so on. I've never removed the tailpiece...

Re: 2015 4003S intonation challenge/issue?
I'm not a luthier, but I've always been able to make the Rickenbacker bridge work as long as the bass and its parts are in generally good shape. Rickenbacker bridge saddles are about $6.00 each and include the adjustment screw and tension spring. At that price I order 4 at a time. I've gone to hobby...

Re: A bit rough around (some) edges...is this normal?
I got the information right from Rickenbacker customer support, not a random dealer. Wildwood Guitars is not a 'random dealer'--particularly in this case.
I'm sending one back. If anyone cares, I'll report on how it went.

Only passing on what I was told. Based on that thread, Rickenbacker should be able to repair the issue quickly. Good deal.

Re: A bit rough around (some) edges...is this normal?
I called Rickenbacker and Wildwood Guitars today to find out what the recourse is for the issue, if any. I called Rickenbacker first and was quickly answered by their customer service line. I mentioned the problem and they were ready with a reply: Rickenbacker doesn't seal the wood grain, so it is f...
