Re: Tom Petty tribute band with a fake Ric.

I agree about the Epiphone J-160. Only thing I ran into is that I had to get the pole pieces on that P-100 up to monolithic heights to get any useable signal, personally. (Could just be my own specimen, I dunno.) That isn't just your specimen those raised pole pieces happened to. The first Epi 160 ...

Re: Tom Petty tribute band with a fake Ric.

If I were in a Beatles tribute band I would not spend two to three thousand dollars on a Gibson J160. I'd use the Epiphone 160. That guitar has the look and really can get the Gibson sound. http://media.musiciansfriend.com/is/image/MMGS7/EJ-160E-John-Lennon-Acoustic-Electric-Vintage-Sunburst/5186530...

Those photos are pretty darn nifty...and they reveal what time of day you took them. If you live north of the equator, those photos were taken, give or take a minute, at 12 noon.

(No thread derail. Just testing out an old boy scout or survivalist's skill.)

Yeah, but you're living on a prayer if you think the black/silver knobs will make the guitar sound better.

Re: Black & Silver Oven Knobs

...I’ve been trying them out on various Rickenbackers.... Clearly taste is subjective (except when it comes to Bon Jovi music...that stuff is just flat out awful), but have you tried orienting the knobs in an 11 o'clock or 11:30 position? They seem to look a lot better that way. Yours going horizon...

That's a loooong time from seeing to owning.
I started playing guitar in 1990. Bought my Ric 12 string in 1992. Two years. And I thought it was an eternity. But 39 years?

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

The "Something New" Ed Sullivan backdrop around the TV is pretty cool. Yes, as far as collectors go, Mr. Irsay's display is tastefully done. Heck, I just put my guitars in front of a white sheet and snap a photo. Jim Irsay at least knows how to do it right. If somebody is going to glom up...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

No Scotty, it's completely black or white. You either buy newer guitars or you're snobby and insecure. There is no middle ground. Just admit that you're snobby and insecure like the rest of us. :) All kidding aside, you do have to admit that Jim Irsay - owner of every single guitar played by every ...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

This is a great topic. Interesting (and blasphemous) take on vintage gear. I say snobbery and an insecurity in the person that makes him have a need to say, "Look at me. Look what I have." It really is that simple. ....says a guy who includes a photo of his guitars in almost every post on...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

...Higher prices for vintage guitars arose partially due to the fact that some companies had serious lapses in quality at certain points in time, such as Fender and Gibson. If the current production models were ****, players longed for the old ones, because they were made better. Well said. And cou...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

I say snobbery and an insecurity in the person It is indeed that simple. I am snobby and insecure, and that's why I buy vintage guitars. Well, at least you are man enough to admit it. This inquiry has now been sufficiently studied and answered satisfactorily. Snobbery and insecurity. I hereby decre...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

I remember that, in the '70s, old guitars were just that, old guitars, with realistic old guitar prices. Well said. A dealer driven ploy...and the snobbery of buyers keeps the whole thing going. I await responses from the knowledgeable folks here who buy/sell vintage guitars to tell us why a well u...

Re: What's the Fascination with Old Instruments?

This is a great topic. Interesting (and blasphemous) take on vintage gear. Unlike classic cars, vintage instruments do look like their 2020 counterparts. Hell, most companies issue re-issues featuring exact specs. So unlike classic autos, it isn't looks that draw people to buy old guitars. It must b...

Re: New guy here

Wait a minute. You play your Rickenbackers through a VOX amp? Cool. I should try that some time.

Welcome aboard. Very nice guitars. Were you going for a match of your floor boards?
