Re: Microfrets bass

Mike Rutherford had a MicroFrets double neck, and a 6 string bass. He used the 6 string bass on the Lame Lies Down album.

Did you ever see the guitar Bob Taylor made from a pallet?

Re: Toaster covers on HiGains W/ adj. pole pieces

Something else to try is to replace that rubber magnet with a regular ceramic, or even neo magnets. The rubber magnets are very weak. A stronger magnet would give you more top end and bite.

Re: Destroyed bass restoration

Very nice work!

I'm getting ready to do something similar to one of my basses where I went router happy back in the 70s lol It wasn't that bad though.

Was that actually maple you used? The grain looked more like some kind of fur or other softwood. It shouldn't matter though.

Thanks!

And yes it is!

I own a pair... March and August '73 4001s that both look like this, only the March bass has the checker binding, full width fingerboard inlays, and the split bridge. And they both have toasters.

'73 4001 trussrod nut size

Hi everyone. I searched for this, but didn't find the answer. I'm repairing a 4001 bass from Sept 1973. It had the usual issue where someone tightened the bent (hairpin style) rods too tight, and the threaded end bent down into the wood. The rod on the bass side was extended so much that I could not...

Re: Remaking The Horseshoe Bass Bobbin

Just like "Glass Onion" - White Album. I hate to break it to you, but that was a 1966 Fender Jazz Bass. Sad, but true. Also, I'm wondering why you used 42 AWG when you should have used 44. But that's why it would sound like Glass Onion. ;) You wound a Jazz bass pickup. Nice work however. :)

Re: How Legal Is This?

The best action is John Hall or someone in his behalf who work for Rickenbacker buy the blueprint from the seller. When the item arrive to Ric offices the 1 step is send a e-mail to the seller telling the item is ilegal because there are a violation of a patent guitar or bass and recover the money....

Re: How Legal Is This?

Nowhere in the description does the seller mention the word "art". It also says nothing about being suitable for framing. I think the fact that the seller is a luthier supply shop gives us a pretty big clue as to the plans intended use. You can build yourself a copy of a Ric. You just can...

Wire the pickup in parallel. If each coil is 5k, in parallel the pickup will read 2.5k. It will sound cleaner and brighter, and will still be hum canceling.

Re: Markbass VS Ampeg SVT

I'd vote Markbass. The SVT is my least favorite bass amp... ever. It's only 300 watts, so I don't know why everyone thinks it's so loud. You can't get a decent clean tone out of them, and the worst part IMO is the tone stack. If you set the amp flat, it's not flat. It always has this big hump at 250...

I saw Deep Purple at the Felt Forum in NYC back in '73, and Roger was playing the JG bass with the Jazz pickups.

Re: Dawning Realisation...

Hah! Believe it or not, John Paul Jones claims he never used flatwounds in Zeppelin. Now try and get the "Dazed & Confused" or "Lemon Song" tone with a Jazz/roundwounds. Ain't happenin'. Wasn't he playing the Gibson EB-1 then? I know Rotosound Swingbass came out in '66, and ...

Re: WHY? OH, WHY?

I also think this whole relic thing is stupid. First off, the word "relic" means something that is obsolete. I own several rather old guitars like a '59 Jazzmaster and a '72 Mustang, and two '74 4001's, they don't look like "relics"! I also had a mid 60's Mosrite Ventures bass an...
