Re: Saving for a 330 12 string - best model years to conside
You may well have seen my 1986 330/6 Maple Glo with black trim on eBay recently (item 111012003721). 25+ years of the wood aging left a stunning, natural-looking finish highlighted by the black trim. It was a terrific guitar in every respect. At that age, pretty much any component that might have tw...

Re: New product for Rick 12-string players!!! Ehrmagerd!!!
The POTR set is the way to go in my humble opinion. Strings are like the tires on a performance car. Buy cheap, long-lasting stuff and you are in for a hell of a ride quality... and NOISE... Step up a bit and buy a NAME brand, you will appreciate the extra traction and flexibility. You may have to i...

Re: Horseshoe magnet test video
Horses.jpg Here are a few clues: 1. The lapsteel magnets measure 1.25" x 4.25" as installed. Not sure about the width of the bass. 2. Lapsteel U's are more parallel, since string gap is narrower. Pickup is very sensitive to the magnet/string/pole gap adjustment, so everything is probably ...

Re: Early 50's S-100 questions
Congratulations on all your hard work. I bought a similar unit and fortunately the horseshoe is fine. You really have to be careful working around this thing, as it will pick up any scrap piece of metal on the workbench and it will be a b*&^% to clean up. My pots were itchy and scratchy, so I fo...

Re: 12 String opinions
As far as the binding goes on the 660/12, you have to check very carefully, since almost all recording equipment nowadays is digital. The white squares typically represent the binary 1, and black squares the binary 0. Carefully go over the guitar and make sure that you have the correct alternating p...

Re: 360/12 tuning issue
The closer you are in diameter for the 2 strings, the easier the intonation, if you ignore the rest of the sound qualities. After all, no one complains about b or e pair, since they are identical. For that "trademark" Ric sound, you want a wound G and a plain octave. .17W and .10 should fi...

Re: 360/12 Humidity Issues
You may be surprised to learn that the common hardware store hygrometer is calibrated to +/- SEVEN PERCENT as attested to in the printed instructions. In any event, what you want to avoid is big or sudden swings one way or another. My ramrod-straight 650D left Arizona's 45% humidity and arrived in m...

Re: Guitar Techs & Rick 12 Strings
Learn to deal with someone who loves the instrument... mainly yourself. That way you don't have to explain anything to a tech about any specific problem. Never give out a job to someone who doesn't want it because the work will be slapdash and the service rude. It's not that difficult to pick up hin...

Re: Traditional or Rickenbacker 12 string setup
Other electrics, such as Dean Boca, re-strung Ric-way = +++++, much more jangle.
Acoustic, re-strung Ric-way = +/-. Not worth the effort of having to change out the nut.
Ric re-strung "classical" way: why do you want to kill the unique tone?

Re: Flatwound Strings
Strings are what puts the rubber on the road. When you have an exotic sports car, you don't shop the sales at some-store-brand-discount tire to find the cheapest rubber. You want the best. If you want the classic sound, don't begrudge the price uptick for a good set of TI's. It's infinitessimal comp...

Re: Tuning up a whole step?
Jdog, at least you won't have to deal with the lawsuits concerning necks with indentations on the sides, discoloration of the binding due to frequent use, or some guy putting his eye out when a string broke as he moved a wonky lever.

Re: Gigging in a cold climate
Randy Bachman, who's been performing in the great White North since the 60's, has an interesting story about transporting harmonicas in the trunk of a car during a Winnipeg winter, arriving late and then rushing directly to the stage with the instruments in tow. It's not hard to imagine what the out...

Roger's tuning down a half step may have been fine back in the day.
But just about every song video he does, he's playing in normal tuning. Guess why they invented the double truss rod?
But still a lesson in different styles of playing.
