Re: Accent vs Bigsby B5, pros and cons?

Okay, so yesterday, I got a chance to play a 1967 fireglo 375, and I have to say, I didn't find the accent obtrusive at all. Never hit it or really noticed it that much, so I think I will go for a accent for my Capri build!

The 360 new style vs 360 old style, why the change?

Does anyone know the history behind why Rickenbacker adopted the rounded top, new style 360? This may be heresy here, but I find the 360 OS much, much more attractive than the 360 NS. I've played a 360 NS from the 70s or 80s (I don't remember exactly) that showed up in my local guitar store a few ye...

Re: Bound F-hole on a guitar?

I could be remembering completely incorrectly, but I seem to recall that there is a very early new style Rose Morris 360 with a bound F hole somewhere in the Register. Someone correct me if I am wrong though. EDIT: Just found it, there is a fireglo June of 1964 365 with what looks to be a factory bo...

Accent vs Bigsby B5, pros and cons?

So I've decided for my Jetglo 360 (or 370, I haven't decided yet) capri build that I would like to have a vibrato (I guess making it a 365 or 375 build), but I'd like some input into which one would be best for the guitar I am building. A historically correct Kauffman Vibrola is definitely out of th...

Vintage fireglo

What did it look like when new? Was it a colorfast dye, or did it fade like pre 1960 Gibsons? I've seen so many variations on it, claiming to be "vintage correct" that I cannot seem to tell.

Re: Ajax blue molded capacitor timeline

That's what I've noticed as well. When did Fender start using blue molded caps in amplifiers? I seem to remember it being late 59 but I could be wrong, my knowledge of vintage fender amps is much smaller than my knowledge of vintage guitars. Perhaps they could provide some further knowledge, assumin...

Re: Output Jack just needs some cleaning or?

There looks to be some oxidation on the contacts/springs preventing a solid electrical connection. I would start with a pencil eraser, and if that doesn't work, then go to a very fine sandpaper, if all else fails, install a new jack.

Ajax blue molded capacitor timeline

I've noticed there are some visual differences between some of the blue molded caps made by Ajax. Some of them say "Made In US" while others say "Made In USA". I've been told that supposedly the "Made In USA" ones are from the 50s, and the "Made In US" ones da...

Re: question about Capri's

Tons of input, great! BTW: The "Old Capri" had just one truss rod and an unfinished fretboard. - Maybe that was the same time they used ovangkol? These little "cheeks" at the headstock were during those days, too. The center strip looks to be Ovangkol (assuming it is not some ob...

Re: Pre 66 bodies, how do they go together?

Hey Benjamin, I would recommend creating an account at the BeatGear Cavern forum . There's a sub-forum there called "Expert-Textpert" where many posters are undertaking projects exactly like yours; plus, former Rickenbacker factory employees Dale Fortune and Mark Arnquist are regular cont...

Re: Pre 66 bodies, how do they go together?

Okay, so I know that before 1966, RICs had a center "block" that was hollowed out along with the "wings" that made up the rest of the body. However, I am kinda confused how these bodies go together, especially around the neck joint. Was the center piece a consistent width down i...

Re: question about Capri's

Another question: Do You own this heartbreaking rest of a 365? I bought it. Since then, I have replaced the missing wing and removed the tenon. It’s going into another Rickenbacker body (a Townshend LE actually) which had its original neck broken beyond repair. A Frankenstein, if you will! Note tha...

Re: question about Capri's

Another question: Do You own this heartbreaking rest of a 365? Unfortunately, no. It was listed a few years ago on Reverb for close to 400 dollars, which isn't much, but I was 18 or 19 at the time, had just started my (rather informal) luthiers apprenticeship, and it sold fairly quickly. It does gi...

Re: question about Capri's

Are you absolutely certain that the center strip was ovangkol? Here are some pics from a destroyed 1961 365, look at the grain on it, looks a lot like walnut. I suppose the only way one could be certain would be to find a unsalvageable late 50s or early 60s RIC, and send it to the USDA Forest Produc...
