I play through a Dr.Z Maz 18 Jr. Get's wonderful Vox and black panel Fender tones very easily.

I have a later 330 that has the Schaller style buttons. Unfortunately, they are too large for Schaller strap locks. All of mine work fine, can you post a photo of yours, perhaps they were changed out from stock? The strap pins are stock. For some reason they are out of spec compared to the standard...

I've been using a Maz18Jr head and Z 1x12 cab with my Ric's for several years. It gets great blackface Fender tones and you can dial in Vox very easily as well. It has an EL84 power platform , with a really versatile tone stack.

He might want to keep an eye on the local Craigs List. Might show up there. Did it have any unusual , identifiable marks , like anything written on it under the pickguard , etc or finish blemishes or visible repairs? That can help to identify it.
