Pickup Placement Differences?

The old 1 inch or 1/2 inch spacing. Has anybody done a back to back comparison to any real differences? I've read some which suggest it's pretty much cosmetic (I personally prefer it), or is there a tonal difference? I'm aware it was moved for structural reasons as well at the time. I'd love to hear...

Re: You Can't Use A Rickenbacker For.....

Great comments, guys - enjoyed reading those!

Sepp - you are spot about our ex, but sadly occasional, drummer. Been in average covers bands all his life, but thinks he could teach Buddy Rich how it should be done!

You Can't Use A Rickenbacker For.....

....Rhythm and Blues! Or so our ex, and on Sunday, drummer for the gig loudly told me. Not for the first time. He was only helping us out as we're 'between drummers', more's the pity! He also claimed that 'no real bass players have ever used those things' - to which I listed a few that had, he said ...

Re: 4001 Amp Settings/EQ

Just curious here, but what Fender did you go too? Went for a Rumble 500 and 115 cab. Have since added the 40 as a practice/small gig amp. They are really super sounding IMHO, much warmer than my old rig. I gigged the 4001 with them a while back, and it was excellent. Change of room the other week ...

Re: 4001 Amp Settings/EQ

Cool ideas.

What is the comb filter effect? I must have always had it, as I've always played Rics maxed out!

4001 Amp Settings/EQ

I've recently changed my rig from Markbass to Fender. Equally lightweight, and for me, a far better and rounded tone. The Precision is awesome through it. I've been struggling a little with my 4001 - it was amazing at one gig, but at rehearsal, wasn't quite as up in the mix. With that in mind, I'd l...

Re: Who's still waiting on a 4003S?

Here's a picture of my new Ruby! I've removed the pickup cover today, restrung with my normal D'addarios, and in the process of giving her a bit of a tweak to my personal tastes. She sounds amazing, and just looks the business. I've had plenty of 4001/03, but never an S. The contoured body is such a...

Re: Who's still waiting on a 4003S?

Just a quick update. I did go for another - a Ruby. This one is the polar opposite of the last one. There is no buzzing at all, the E string is alive and bristling with tone, and even better, I think it's pretty light, in at around 8.8lbs (same as my USA Precision). Compared to some 4003's I've play...

Re: Who's still waiting on a 4003S?

I got mine today, and it's going right back. The level of buzzing/humming from the pups is simply unusable - I've owned a good few Rics before, and the buzzing was never anywhere near as loud as this. It was overpowering! I could have had another, but I've opted for a refund. Sad, as the bass is a p...

New 4003S Tone

One for the new 4003S owners here. I assume the pickups in the new 4003S' are the same as in the current 4003...but besides the body shape, does the bass sound exactly the same as a new 4003? Only ask as I've often read that even changes in wood can affect the tone. Quite tempted with the looks......
