Re: Tail lift on a 4001C64 re-issue

I had to replace my '74 4001 tailpiece last month. Bend became past the point of having an effect on the intonation, etc. Went down the Hipshot route. Had one of these a few years back, went through the saddle wobble thing....but this one seems okay. Maybe the issues have been addressed? Still, no c...

Re: Brightest flatwound strings to keep that rounds Ric tone

Fender flats, 9050L.

Use these on my 4001 - they keep the Ric tone - in fact, I wouldn't use anything else on mine. :D

Re: Inexpensive Case Options?

I use a Gator GPE-TSA case for storage, and when I take mine out. I bought my first one a few years ago after asking the same question here, and I purchased the suggested item! It's not as snug as a Ric-brand case (what would be?) but it's a good fit, hard-wearing, and I've trusted my '74 around and...

Who's Using Stainless Rotosounds?

I probably hadn't gone near a set of these for about 15 years. Always a bit too scared of the fretwear thing. However, getting my 4001 back from a re-fret, I thought I'd take the plunge and see what it was all about. I've never played a 4001 with Roto's, only a 4003 some years back. Went for slightl...

Re: My New '74

Thanks guys, comments appreciated. Also, a sensible balance for restoration. That was the task. I wanted it to be playable, but not take away from it's history or general vibe. The neck was tricky - you could feel the missing paint a mile off! As such, a little bit of tidying has transformed the ins...

My New '74

Last year, I managed to score a February '74 4001 in JG. I already own an April in MG - I love it, so couldn't resist this one when it came up. It had been owned by a UK bass player, who had a been a member of an up-and-coming indie band during the 80's. They had recorded some singles, a John Peel r...

Re: Mojo or time to refinish?

I'd only refin if it feels uncomfortable to play. I recently had a neck refin on a '74 (as soon as the weather improves, I'll take pics for a thread), but only as the missing paint had cracked off, and it was very noticeable to play. Feels great now. It can be finished to a great standard, so I woul...

Lovely looking instrument.

I salute your patience. I'm expecting my '74 back in the next couple of weeks, and that's only been 3 months.....it feels like a lifetime! :D

I'm sure you'll have a blast playing it!

Re: Deep Purple's Ricks

I thought it was unmodified on 'Made In Japan' as well? I did read a timeline once where it tried to guess when the mod was done.

I love Roger's 4001 tone. I love pointing out to people when they hear 'Smoke On The Water' on the radio that it's a 4001! :D

Re: Used Rickenbacker prices

Prices have certainly dipped over here in the UK as well. A few years back, I could buy, play, and sell a bass for the same or more than I paid! However, the new prices have gone up a fair bit, but the used market hasn't seemingly moved with it, a used bass seems to sell for the same as it did in 20...
