Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

I never once got any impression that "bashing" was part of this conversation. Rather, I wanted to clarify my personal observations pertaining to older Rick basses. Kevin, I for one appreciate your input and your attitude concerning this subject. Jeff on the other hand...

Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

Thanks for the input, guys! I would have to believe that some are still structurally sound and playable. My experience with wood is that there are variables even between sister wood (cut from the same log side by side) which can lead to serious movement.

Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

Kevin, I was being a bit silly before about the open string comment. Of course, everything about the woods and materials plus the overall design of stringed instruments collectively affect the tone. An aluminium nut being harder yet lighter in weight than Bakelite, will transfer more string energy b...

Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

Back in the 80's players went bonkers for brass! Brass pickguards, bridges, thumbrests, nuts, saddles, and "Fatheads", a peghead shaped brass plate where the tuners were removed and the plate stuck on and the tuners reinstalled... Tone monster!

I've wanted to do this also, but never got 'round to it. IMO, aluminum is generally good for tone. Hmm, now wondering what an aluminum nut would do? :?:

Kevin, they're great if you play every song with open strings...

Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

Jason, the "word" was something one finds in one's nose that is removable! Jeff, I have used the compression plug method on a V63 Rick that I once owned. It was a definite improvement to overall rigidity. I also made some aluminum saddles which added a nice round clarity without it soundin...

Re: Very nice early '68 4001 at Willie's Guitars

Hey everybody, are all of the older 60's Rick basses prone to high action with the bridges bottomed out? In my experience I have worked on a several 60's Rick basses and on all of them the bridge was adjusted all the way down. Some had their saddles ground down as well. I have even seen where the wo...

C'mon Paul! You know you wanna! (#3) Thanks for the pics and info guys. 1963 was a pivotal transition year for Rickenbacker basses.

Re: Oh what a bass, late December back in '63

A beautiful example! Just beautiful... Hey guys, would this bass be one of the first of the 4001 series which has the features we have come to know and love? With the exception of the inlays of course! I realized I wasn't sure when that happened.
