Re: Optima flatwounds 4440
As we talked about earlier the Optima 4099 seems to have changed over the years. http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=413370&start=15 The latest sets I bought (a years ago) were stiffer than the first ones, and this stiffer set had a much "deader" A and E string (l...

Well, the old Maxima 4440 set I have measures .045 .055 .073 .101ibal wrote:Hopefully they've got the formula right, but I don't think the gauging is the same. John Hall says the old Maxima 4440's were .040, .050, .077, and .112

Re: Optima flatwounds 4440
Thanks for the tip. Been waiting for those. Just ordered two sets. From the description,
the package, and the designation ‘4440’, my expectations are quite high.

Re: Mojo or time to refinish?
If it was me I would refinish it. Me, I wouldn’t even consider not refinishing it (unless it was a very famous player that had worn it down, but then I couldn’t afford it anyway). If a car has some rust, and the finish is dull and scratched - I don’t find that charming or appealing in any way, even ...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
I guess you still have the original, very hot toaster in your V63. Another thing is that the TI you have on the V63 produces a much stronger output than the Pyramid Gold on your 4003 (Pyramids are the lowest output flats I have tried). Much hotter pickups and strings with a much stronger output – ye...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
Got the strings on the way, my friend! That change is the obvious part for me. Sorry I didn't include it in the original post. I'm asking the questions about the less obvious bits. I've definitely experimented with pickup height but with the horseshoe particularly, there is very limited play as the...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
I have two Lollar horseshoe pickups. Bought them back in 2011 when they cost only $340 (if I remember correctly). Very high quality. The pole screws are adjustable. The bobbin is wax pottet. Due to sharp corners of the shoes I find the RIHS quit uncomfortable when resting my hand on the shoes while ...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
The RIHS don't have magnetized HS. Is this why the reading on a RIHS should be at around 8.0k unwound, which is higher than the Lollar HS or rebuilt HS with real magnetized HS? When I unwound my RIHS years ago, I wanted it to match the scatter wound Toaster. The toaster and RIHS are constructed the...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
Here is a photo of the original bobbin from my V63 RIHS with the tape removed. The inner end of the copper thread is connected to the red lead out wire from the bottom of the bobbin. The outer end of the copper thread is soldered to the black lead out wire. Measure resistance between the two lead ou...

Re: Lets talk about horseys
Underwinding a RIHS is simple. No need for a pickup winder. Measure the resistance, unwrap 500 rounds by hand, and measure resistance again to get an idea of how much resistance those 500 turns took off. The keep unwrapping turns until you reach the target resistance. I can’t remember exactly, but I...

Re: Early 80's Hardcase?
That case looks a lot like the case I got from a UK dealer 4 or 5 years ago. The dealer (I can’t remember who) had a batch of new cases made by G&G Quality Case Co. (the company that made cases for Rickenbacker). The NOS case you’re looking at could come from that batch - maybe?. http://i1019.ph...

Re: Please Help- Proper Replacement Mono Jack / Early 80's 4
Yes, #13 it is. The stereo wiring has a #13 (mono jack with make-contact switch) for mono output, and a #12B for the stereo output. The #13E is a mono jack with break-contact switch, and #11 is a simple mono jack with no switch. Myself, as I only use the mono output, I wired it a bit different to av...

Re: The Famous Ric/Maxima S4440 Flatwound
... Or, maybe it’s a matter of cleaning them properly as polishing compound and residues might make a string stiffer (or?). The first sets I bought were to be clean, I didn’t clean them when I put them on, and didn’t get black fingers. The previous set I put on (which might have come from a black p...
