Re: Ohhhhhhh 12-string bass....

I was also really late to game w/coursed string basses. I had always been intrigued seeing Rockpile/Lowe, TP and Jon Brant using them way back when I began playing in the early 80s.. but I never encountered one in person to actually try out. Finally bit the bullet in 2008 and picked up an Ibanez ST-...

Re: Bent neck?

I pulled off the pick guard to take a look inside. That is an unusually large cavity for the pickup. Do they use this same cut for the 4003S models? I have some hard Maple that I can cut to fit but there has to be slots cut for the truss rods to be removed and a slot must be cut for the pup poles t...

Re: Light Guage String Set Recommendation

D'Addario makes a set of extra light nickel rounds (40-95). EXL-220s. I've had good experience with that set on octave basses, and the EXL-170s (100s) are my mainstay on the 4 strings. Low cost, and they last a long time for me.

Re: NBD Fernandes 8-string

My first octave bass was an old Ibanez ST-980, and that one had a massive gap between the root and octaves - 4mm (measured string edge-to-edge). I later found a Hamer B8S and BC Rich Bich 8, and the root/octave spacing on both of those is only 2mm. Those feel great to me, but it's all a matter of pr...

Re: SAD SIGHT

I had interpreted his concern to be whether there is permanent damage to the neck as a result of the strings being left off for a few months, and not having any tension to counter the action of the rods that were left under tension (unlikely, unless it was a dud neck to begin with)... not whether th...

Re: SAD SIGHT

my concerned is it could'v been damaged as there has been no tension on it for a few months. thanks anyway.. If there was no string tension and the rods were still torqued down, there's always a possibility of a neck warping into a backbow... but it's not a given. I'd be surprised if that one could...

Re: 330 bass

I would have to have a bridge made or perhaps something like the Hipshot Gibson style replacement bridge on studs, or I could use a Hipshot A style I have on hand but that would require a block under it to raise it up enough to work. If it helps... the Czech-made BaCH non-reverse Thunderbirds used ...

All subjective, of course... but man do I love that pre!

Sounds nice with guitar as well (despite my playing). Guess it should, given its origins.

^^ cool display! I raise my hat to your good taste in gear. I just love and live by the Orange 200B. What a superb amp. A Distillate and a Thunderbird are the two beasts I am still looking to hang on my walls. I've had that one since about '04-'05. There are a lot of mixed opinions around new Orange...

Nice collection! I love the Distillate!!! Yeah, the Distillate is lovely. Thanks! That one is an '83, and kind of unusual with its maple facings... Always liked the simplified Distillate control layout. Nice for live use- not overly fiddly. http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k125/0chromium0/forums/a...

Re: Low Action Trick ?

Yeah, the 60s ones have the hairpin truss rods. Both my '66 and my '68 are adjusted almost flat at pitch and I have the same light gauge strings on each. But the bridge adjustment on each differed quite a bit. .....which is what made me ask how much difference from bass to bass was there during tha...

Re: Low Action Trick ?

I don't know anything about the 60s Rics... do they use "conventional" rods? or are they the 70s hairpin style rods? Is there any benefit to loosening the rod, clamping the neck into a backbow, and then snugging it up again? That of course is how I setup my 70s Rics with the hairpin rods, ...
