Re: RIC-Made Treble PUP Bezels Available!

They have finally become what they once pursued: selling a copied product at a vastly reduced price! What a nerve! That, in a nutshell, is a perfect way to sum this up! OR The more someone consistently complains about something, the more they are apt to be the ones doing it. Ric TRCs should really ...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

I feel really bad for that guy, he got royally screwed by RIC. For that kind of coin, I hope he hired a lawyer so he would be made whole on that deal. Buying a special or limited edition is very very risky as when it goes in for warranty refinishing, there's no guarantee that RIC will be willing, or...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

You could even go into a woodworkers store and tell them you want to ‘glass bed’ something. They should know what you are trying to achieve. I’ve been told gunsmiths do this to some rifle barrels. This is what I use for my rifles. https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/stock-work-finishi...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Just start out adding until the tailpiece sits too high. Then remove. It may be that the gap is paper thin, so get some really thin ones too. Shim stock works also. When under pressure with strings tuned to pitch, the tailpiece perimeter should just barely “kiss” the body surface. Not be pressed int...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Maybe it's time to revive the old penny/washer trick!

Simpler to do, may yield a similar result! 8)

Again, YMMV

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Any type of woodworkers epoxy should work. It just needs to be the kind for tooling/profiling/shaping, not for adhesion purposed like glue. You want a two-part product, it's typically an epoxy resin and a hardener. They are usually sold together, but not always. There’s also the venerable ‘Bondo’ th...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

I’ve actually been offered an as-new BRG for an extremely good price, no bubbling I’m aware of. But I’m loathe to buy it in case it bubbles at a later date. Odd really I suppose, as I’d spend more on a vintage bass with dings and scrapes and not bat an eyelid. Not that it’s the bubbling that bother...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

In these days of CNC and 3d models, this is completely unacceptable. The thing is, the bridge route depth cannot be precisely routed for these reasons: - The body top is hand sanded, so that brings in a variable into its actual depth. If too much is sanded, the resulting depth will be too shallow, ...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Sounds like it’s been a problem going way way back, but seems to occurring much more frequently with the newer finish.
So older basses are okay to include. Oil finish basses like walnut need not be included.

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Okay, so with these previous threads: http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=408006 http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=413568 it seems the issue has been brought to this forum and discussed in-depth, yet when this thread was started, many RRF forum member...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

There is a deep oval route under the tailpiece, directly under the bridge itself. That's where the most obvious finish failure is. Sometimes that route is a hair too deep, and people have done the penny trick to maintain intimate contact with the bridge well and the body. People have also done the p...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

If it's developing in the same general area on all of the affected instruments, could it be a result of pressure from the tailpiece at that point? It seems to me that it's also the same general area that the tailpieces develop the "lift"; could the bending of the metal there result in a p...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

All the TalkBass members have posted info on are 4003 models. And yes, some purchasers have the bubbling appear in the same place again, even after a warranty refin. (I'm not aware of what goes on in the guitar world.) Back in 2011, RIC had a small run of 4001 C64 basses in TV Yellow, White, and Sea...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

All we know for certain is that the defect has similar characteristics and has been occurring in the same physical places on the instrument since 2010. And in some cases, basses returned for a warranty refin and sent back to the customer as “fixed” develops the same defect in the same place again, b...

Re: Bubbling Finish Issues?

Well, buying one used or second hand, no warranties would transfer anyway. There are sooooooo many variables in this that it may take some time before a fix is found. Was it the wood? Was it the paint? Was it the clearcoat? Was it the mix of the paint/clearcoat? Was it the brand/batch? Was it the c...
