Re: Inherited 1968 Ric and need advice

My '72 4001 was refretted by Mike Lull. He used a razor knife to slit the finish at the frets so they could be removed without lifting the finish or wood. He said that because of the binding he basically had to shape the frets correctly before inserting them - no cutting them a little long and filin...

Re: The hated Tuxedo rocks!

I know that the majority of you hate how I restored this bass. As has often happened in my life, I find myself in the minority. I love it! Agree it wants a star or two on the headstock, though. Once I tore my eyes away from the bass, I noticed your Versatone. I bet the Tuxedo sounds awesome through...

Re: Allen wrench for old style 4004 bridge?

I think the 4001 uses a 1/16" Allen wrench (been so long since I had to adjust mine, my memory is a bit vague on this).

1/16" = 1.5875 mm, so "a little bit smaller" might mean 1.5 mm.

Re: 1984 V63 Magnetic Horseshoe Pickup Question

I'd be interested in seeing answers to this question, just out of curiosity. Chances are slim I'll ever own an RM1999 or other 60s 4000-series bass. It might be a good idea to start a new thread with a title something like "RM1999 weigh-in", it would get more attention there than in a thre...

Re: 2000 model 4003 - upgrade pots or not?

All the pots are 330K and I am 100% certain that aside from my use of an official 330K push-pull and the oil cap, she is 100% standard. When I tested those pots out of curiosity they were around 180K. How did you test the pots? 180K is suspiciously close to half of 330K. Keep in mind that when ther...

Sadly, at that price it is more likely to go to a collector than to a musician who will play it.

If I had $3000 of crazy money looking to be spent, I'd buy it and play the snot out of it! The only thing better than a Rickenbacker bass is... two Rickenbacker basses!

Welcome to the Forum!

Over on another web site where people "talk bass" they have a rule: pictures, or it didn't happen

Got any pictures of your bass? No better way to make friends here than by sharing some in the Rickenbacker Basses section.

Re: Poor old 4000

I don't have my copy of The Book handy to consult... wasn't the 4001S also set neck in that era? How did they manage routing for the neck pickup without the bass folding in half? Anyone with a set neck 4001S who could take a picture with the pickguard removed?

I love it! All over the world, Fender basses that thought they had mojo are crying themselves to sleep again tonight....

The front pickup is a custom re-wind by Curtis Novak, and ... measures 7.4K ohms just like the stock Rickenbacker toaster so it SOUNDS the same, but has better focus. ... The Horseshoe is a stock re-issue from 2003. The pickups both sound great individually, but the toaster is a little quiet so I'm...

Re: W/SW 1.5lbs lighter?

I just got a 72 4001 and it's very light as well! Curious... I have a '72 4001 (LKxxxx, November 1972), and it's actually pretty heavy, 9.8 lbs. on the postal scale at work. Part of that is the reissue horseshoe, but I think even before that it was about 9.2 lbs., not what I'd consider "very l...

Very nice work! If you were on stage and I were in the audience, I probably would think it was 50+ years old.

Are those reissue pickups? If so, how do they play together?

I don't think he blocked it himself. I get a message blaming "WMG". I assume it was a DMCA takedown request, probably from a bot. And probably arguably invalid, since it should qualify as "fair use" for educational purposes. Anyway, bummer... I need to jump on these things and do...

Re: RI horseshoe vs. Classic Amplification bridge pickup

Oh, man, I think I just fell in love with that fretless! I really like the sound of the original toaster in my 4001, and I've read that the new RIC scatterwound toasters are very similar. I have a RIHS, it seems to me to be a bit hotter than the toaster. I've toyed with the idea of unwinding it a li...
