Re: '64 harmony humm

I'm going to guess that you have a capacitor going or dead. It may need a full cap job.

Re: Vox AC-30cc2 "Tune Up"

I hate to be contrary, but I have been quite happy with Chinese tubes. I think a lot of things get a bum rap when they are piled on in internet fora. Since Ei tubes have become terribly hard to get, I use the Chinese EL84s in my DC30, so I can save my Ei's and NOS tubes for lower voltage amps. They ...

Re: Having second thoughts about a VOX AC30cc2

Well, the Vox is the king of that chimey thing. I definitely prefer the EF86 channel of the H2. It does make me crazy how the chassis of the Vox is designed- concentrated heat, imperfect ventilation (new ones might be better than the old ones), a pain to change tubes and service. I'd say the H2 is a...

Re: Discharging a Capacitor

The issue is that stray current returns to the chassis and to the earth ground. I'm looking at what I can read about "safety guitar grounds" for strings. So far, what I'm reading generally is about noise, rather than actual safe grounding practice, but I know sometimes a capacitor (low val...

Re: Discharging a Capacitor

It's really so you're not the ground return to earth to complete the circuit.

I think it was my brother who told me when I was a young person, "if the amp doesn't know where its ground is, it's probably you."

Caution is a good thing.

Re: Discharging a Capacitor

Would a custom cable, connecting just the ground lug of the amps power input to just the ground of the wall outlet, provide the least path of resistance? If I understand your question, then that is exactly what the green ground wire in a regular power cord does. Now, as to path of least resistance,...

Re: Odd colour basketweave tolex as seen on Vox/Hiwatt/Matamp

I'm a tube nut, but I realize that to the person in the audience that it just might not matter at all if I'm playing through a pile of diodes or ancient top cap tubes through refrigerator-sized iron. With this in mind, it makes perfect sense that we could obsess about the perfect tolex texture. I'll...

Re: Odd colour basketweave tolex as seen on Vox/Hiwatt/Matamp

Mojotone has some colors of "rough" tolex (that is the basketweave pattern), but nothing terribly interesting. I hope their orange is better than the way it looks in the pic.

I hadn't seen anything close to blue boy in decades, but here's a levant (not basketweave) that I'm probably going to try:

Re: Discharging a Capacitor

and, of course, the one tongue rule applies. For those who don't know about the one hand rule: the idea is that you don't want to complete a circuit through your heart. If you have one hand on the chassis or colder part of the amp, and the other side on something like the high voltage, it is going t...

Re: 650 Sierra New Guitar day

I have a 650C that is just dreamy. Yes, it isn't as high-output as some other humbuckers, but way more balanced for tone (more treble- more "Rickenbackerish"). I don't have to put it down for another Ric between songs, but, well, you know. I can always turn up the input and/or output volum...

Yes, it is said that there are old amp techs and bold amp techs, but there are no old bold amp techs.

Please do not use the tongue discharge method.

Re: Trouble in paradise.

Start with the things you can sort out the quickest. Cables, jacks, have caused a fair amount of trouble in the past (someone I know once used the worst possible cable combination with terrible results- speaker cable with guitar, instrument cable for speaker). Try plugging the bass into somebody's g...

Re: Discharging a Capacitor

FYI Collin: I have a Ceriatone version of a DC30 and am extremely happy with it. Replace that cap, inspect the rest carefully and have fun!
