Re: Pickguard for 4000 bass
In fact the page I posted the drawing is here viewtopic.php?f=14&t=406343 (hadn't realised it was as simple as copy and paste)

Re: Pickguard for 4000 bass
Hi. If you are still having any difficulty I posted just such a thing in response to someone else's request in July 2012. At that time the OP said Pickguardian didn't have a template. I made that drawing from my 1975 4000. Sorry, I'm not sure how to directly link to a post. Search the 'RRF Gear Tech...

Re: Alternative pickup positions
Thanks Cassius987 - lot of useful info there.
Checked out the pics of the mid pickup 4001FL you mention - looking cool.
As is aceonbass's 4003 - intriguing stuff!

Re: Alternative pickup positions
Cheers Scott. Does sound easier with two folk, I'll see how far I get finding a willing assistant then (and suitable pickup of course). PM sent to Cassius987.

Re: Alternative pickup positions
Cheers everyone for your thoughts and input. Hand held pickup to get the position eh? Does sound like a simpler route and less messing about certainly. Appreciate the suggestion. Would a different pickup not have a different 'aperture' though? At least I think that's the word for the area of string ...

Alternative pickup positions
Hi Just a bit of curiousity I've never personally been taken with the neck pickup soloed on my 4001. It's at the 1" position so I miss the 5th fret harmonic for one thing. I don't want to change the pickup itself or start messing with the route to try the 1/2" position, but notice the exis...

Re: Neck Pickup height
I'm in the UK and might give this trick a whirl. Obviously makes more sense for me to buy locally, but looking around, I find a range of pull forces are available on different magnets. I notice the magnet recommended in this post has a pull force of 18.33 lbs - for those that have tried this, is tha...

Re: Higain horror
You know at one point i'd even tried one of the other nuts on the long screw to see if it fitted, with that very thought in mind, but then looked at the length of that wire and thought 'Nah, that'll be a bit of a stretch for it to reach, don't want to risk straining it' - so didn't even try it. Sinc...

Re: Higain horror
Actually now looking at the other black wire I referred to in response to Eriks suggestion, I can see that the wire there looks too thick to be coil wire, so I'm now assuming both the black wires are transitional connection wires and not sheathed coil wire. If that's so, just stripping back the wire...

Re: Higain horror
Thanks for going to the trouble of suggesting that. Actually that had occurred to me, but I'd abandoned that route when I saw that the the other wire from the coil is soldered to a metal terminal grounding thing (sorry, I don't know the proper term for it) - anyhow that is held onto the pickup basep...

Higain horror
Hi Ooops! Was trying to to get the stock neck pickup on my '78 4001 to sound a bit louder by making some shallow recesses for the screws into the pickguard back to try and get it a bit closer to the strings... Anyway, it must have been one test reassembly too many with the pickup wire being moved ar...

Re: 1973 Rickenbacker 4000 pickguard
Actually I forgot to mention a couple of things in my last post (with my little drawing). At the risk of stating the obvious - I've located the screw holes exactly as they are on mine - so I daresay they might not align on another 4000 (on mine, for example, the one nearest the bridge pickup is noti...

Re: 1973 Rickenbacker 4000 pickguard
Thought I'd throw mine into the mix with any others which appear. I've made this template up using my Fireglo '75 4000's pickguard and turned it into a jpg to attach it to the post (original is an Illustrator vector). I've just stuck on a couple of dimensions as a guide to check if printed. If you w...

Re: Residues in cracks
I daresay it was my rambling and stabs in the dark that gave the impression it was checking. Your explanation also helps me understand why there was so much over a continuous area on the back though, Paul. I'm glad Gary prompted me to put up some pics now. Having owned it for the past 30 odd years v...

Re: Residues in cracks
Thanks for the feedback guys. I struggled getting representative photos, but hopefully these might be a little help all the same. The close up is more how things look in reality if the light noticably hits the cracks and the wider shot gives perhaps an idea of the area and crack pattern (actually ma...
