Re: Terence Trent D'arby

That first album was so-ooo good. He had that awesome Sam Cooke thing with the break in his voice at just the perfect place, and the tracks were slamming.

Re: Juliana Hatfield with a 425 (Minor Alps band)

Jules is a local treasure. My buddy Dave Gibbs (Gigolo Aunts) still has her old Rick 4001 that she used in the Blake Babies.

Re: McCartney's fretless Rick??

I suppose the main thing is, does anybody know of any recordings of Macca playing fretless? I can't think of any.

Re: Pugwash

Had a lovely Pugwash moment ths afternoon, riding my bike along Memorial Drive near Harvard Square and listening to The Olympus Sound. Come to New England, Thomas. I'll sort you out for a Boston date.

Re: What kind of bass amp do you use with your Rickenbacker?

No judgement- not everybody is looking for the same sound or anything- but for those of us who use Rics to emulate our bass heros the 60s, a tube amp is a must. I know, I know "Oh, my aching back" and all that, but if that's the thing you're after, you have to really be able to ******** yo...

Re: painful to see

that's the one. I told him exactly that: if he ever just wants to get it off his hands, I'd give him $400 for it. But I wouldn't really even want to get involved in that big of a project. I bet he thought he was going to restore it at one point as well.

painful to see

This guy keeps posting this for sale. It's so hard to see a Ric bass in this sad state, but it would take some serious fortitude to restore this.

No worries, I use a pick, fingers, my elbow-anything I can think of to get a sound.

Re: New Hofner 500/5 Stu Sutcliffe "President Bass"

Thanks, lads! It's on iTunes with a bunch of other similar stuff. Matter of fact, the b-side is the one where you can really hear the bass sound:

Next album features lots of 4001 fuzz parts.

Re: new 4003 in the house

Thanks, I'm going to leave it stock for now, but down the line I may try adding a toaster in the neck and maybe going for the 1/2" placement. I'm much more of a McCartney guy, but right now I'm having fun unleashing my inner Geddy. The 15 year old in my brain is totally cranked up about it!

new 4003 in the house

The Fed Ex guy came at the end of the day and I was so busy playing Yes and Rush songs last night to post a photo. It's a 2009 and I like it quite a lot. It certainly doesn't the mojo that my friends '72 4001 had,but I had to give that back. Only thing is, I'm getting a lot of 60 cycle hum, might ha...

Re: JangleBox JB2 Byrds Limited Edition

I got it, I'll probably return it. It's great, but i don't think it's all that much better than my original Jangleboox- there's certainly a lot more EQ control, but I don't need a boost, honestly.

Re: Rooftop concert bassman

I absolutely love the way the band sounded in that period. I have tons of bootlegs of that period, but i have to say I thought the Let It be Naked album was a great chance to hear those tracks properly. I have it on vinyl and I love Paul's bass tone- those black nylon rotosounds.

Re: My newest favorite bass amp!

I have the most kickass all tube bass head: a Trace Elliot V6 with 6 KT88s, sounds amazing , but I have to admit that I feel a little cheesy that it's a Trace. No lime green anywhere, I swear, but I have often thought of putting it in a black head box. I have a HIwatt cab, so it would sort of imply ...
