Re: Just got a new 4003 in Mapleglo

The Rock Inn? Ha! I was just having dinner @ Hanami Japanese around the corner last night! I've never seen a Rick 4003 on the walls at the Rock Inn. I bought my '83 AzureGlo 4003 from Melbourne sight unseen, having no idea whether it would agree with me or not, having never seen a Rick 4003 in a sho...

Rick AzureGlo = Finish colour shift under lights?

Hi everyone, So I have an '83 Ricky 4003. I think it may be Azure Glo. The bass has been my #1 for almost a decade now, always wearing flats like a champ. Question is, My bass seems to shift colours, and my band mates over the years have noticed it too. Under strong stage lights (mainly blue/green l...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

I remember reading somewhere on this forum, many years back, that lowering the pickups can help with volume balance to some extent, due to the non-linear relationship between magnetic field strength and distance. The cost will be reduced output, but maybe worth a shot? This is exactly what I have s...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

I'm pretty sure the pole pieces on the higains are not to be moved, except on the newest ones (from 2008 or so). There's some threads on the topic in here I'm sure. They can be moved with a pair of pliers and some force, but you will probably dent the little caps, ask me how I know this. They can b...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

Well, I got impatient and tried it. The pole pieces are fixed in there so solidly, that only excessive force with a pair of pliers may twist them. I gave up on that. I tried giving them a solid tap (out of the bass obviously) with the back of the pickup up against a brick, and no, they really don't ...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

Is the E string weak when playing unplugged? Nope, only when plugged in. I think it's to do with the distance from the pickup pole. I think I'd do a set up from scratch and see what gives.... I seem to remember this issue in the past on this forum.. maybe search e string, dead e, etc an see what yo...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

A simpler solution MAY BE a tweak of the truss rods. Just a quarter turn on one or maybe both may squeeze the wood just enough to shift a dead spot around and make the string sing a little louder. Can't hurt to try it. Good Point! I'd totally forgot about that little technique - I'll give it a shot...

Re: 1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

The bass is new to me - I've tried two different sets of strings, both have had the issue.

I'd really appreciate if anyone has some tips here :?:

1980's 4003 - Weak E string?

Hi All, I've done a search, found a few things, but still have some questions. I'm not concerned with whether this is a myth or not, I've setup heaps of guitars and basses over the years - this is not a problem I've experienced before that I've been unable to fix. I own an '82 4003, it's a killer ba...

Replacing the Bridge Pickup Surround?

Hi peeps, (I did a search but couldn't find anything useful) So I've setup my 4003, but I've got a small problem. I generally like a low-ish action. I've set the bass up with an almost dead-straight neck with the faintest relief. The bass plays amazingly, love how well this Rick plays with a low act...

Treble Bezel for 4001?

Hi All, Many thanks for all the input here lately. Got another question. I'd like to pick up one of the 4001-style straight edged treble bezels. Like this; http://tubeampology.com/store1/4001-treble-bezels/4001-treble-bezel-deluxe/ Only it seems like Pick-of-the-Ricks & TubeAmpology are all out ...

Re: Strap-Locks for a Ricky?

Just in case anyone else stumbles across this and has a similar problem, I'll leave this here. I wanted the mod to be completely reversible, so I decided not to go with the Matchsticks or Drumstick idea. I ended up buying some 3/16 bolts, 25mm in length, with the same thread pattern as the Ric strap...

Strap-Locks for a Ricky?

Hi All, I own a Rick 4003, '82 Azure Blue. Problem is, the standard strap pins are small and repeatedly slip from my straps (I own several, they all suffer from this). I've got no confidence in myself not to drop the bass during a show as I like to jump around. I really don't want to drop my Rick, s...
