Re: "I Need You" 6-string or 12?

brammy, as we mentioned above: by Scastles » 15 Jul 2012 02:01 am Aw, c'mon Peter, you know it was the 12. George Martin kept a listing on the instruments used in 3 songs from Help. It was in his book, which the title eludes me and is OOP. Besides the 12 and the volume pedal (which they did h...

Re: "I Need You" 6-string or 12?

hello Terry, there were volume pedals at least since 1960 or 61. The Beatles used their first volume pedal (in early 1965) for "Yes it is" and "I need You". The photos of John Lennon in front of George Harrison's guitar volume pot came from 1964, recording "Baby's in black&q...

Re: "I Need You" 6-string or 12?

yes, O.K.,Jake,
but there are some really high pitched notes on 'Yes it is' , probably from the g-octave string?

Wolfgang
b.t.w. I can't hear octaves and unisons on "I need You", too.

Re: "I Need You" 6-string or 12?

hello, here is my posting from 2006: "new books, new facts. We forgot "What you're doing". And: the volume pedal guitar on "I need you" is the Rickenbacker 12-string. (from "Recording the Beatles"). If this is so, then it's probably true for "Yes it is" a...

Re: The Beatles' Mystery Strat

the Strats were there right from the beginning of the Help! studio sessions ( Babiuk: February 1965). To me: first use John: Ticket to ride, George: Yes it is: with volume pedal (if it's not the Rickenbacker 12-String!), solo in "If You've got troubles", introduced by Ringo "Oh, rock ...

the last of Jake's photos was published in the Mojo speacial "The Beatles, Classic, Rare Unseen" from 2004 p.78/79 with the following note: "The Beatles by Bob Whitaker, London, Dec 1964 Rehersals for the second Beatles Christmas Show in December 1964. These shots were taken at the Do...

Re: McCartney's new Hofner bass!

well, to me it was a graet performance for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee BBC Concert. Yes, Paul's voice loses stability for some years now. So you do not want to see him on stage anymore? No! It was a nice choice of songs from the last six (o.k., five) decades, and it was a very british selection: All...

Re: Is the bass in Something Drop D?

the bass is in standard tune
he played C (3rd),B (3rd), A(probably open 3rd), G (4th), F (4th), E (4th), C(3rd)

Well, he should have played C, B, A. G, E, D (2nd), C, but his version is quite right, too...
(lowest string (E) =4th, highest string (G)= 1st)

Re: Gibson j160E versus Epiphone counterpart

hello, I've never seen a Gibson J160E. But my Epiphone JE160E JL has a string length of 25 inches (650mm), the Gibson should have the standard scale length of 24,5 inches (628 mm). The Gibson shoud have an height- adjustable bridge, the epiphone has'nt. The action of the Epi is about 3mm, so you can...

Re: I Want You/She's So heavy

hello,
just for the record: in my post I did not made a difference between glissando or playing single notes going up or down a scale.
Fretted or not or even on keyboards, to me it`s always a glissando. But you made a difference here. Sorry for my inexactitude..

Re: I Want You/She's So heavy

It IS a really nice bass part Paul played on I want You. To me the glissando (at 4 minutes 08seconds) starts at the 14th fret. Just slide down to the 2nd fret and try to play every note with the pick - up and down strokes- although I think McCarney played only nine notes instead of 13. And he almost...

Re: Poll: "Words of Love" lead guitar

to me it's the Gretsch.
Maybe the package case is not a tea package case but an old suitcase with hinges, with which Ringo generated these chirping "Crickets sounds" heard?
