Re: Help this young pup define his goal.
Hey everyone! I haven’t even logged in for a couple of years, and just thought I’d touch base! I picked up a new 4003S in Mapleglo in November of 2017 and am still very happy with it. I did have the output rewired for stereo, and replaced the stock bridge with the chromed brass Hipshot bridge (I nev...

It's Finally Happened
Some of you know me as a constant lurker and wannabe Ric player. Well I can happily say that at least the later is no longer true. Today is new bass day! Picked her up from Guitar Center last night. New 2015 Rickenbacker 4003s. Anyone who knows me is aware of what a big deal this is, it's the bass I...

Re: Rush Exit Stage Left Geddy Lee
I wholeheartedly agree that MOST of the tone is in the fingers, so to speak. That is unless you're trying to cop the Squire sound, in which case the pick technique is a huge factor, but I digress. Gear does play a pretty significant role in sound as well though. In my opinion Geddy just didn't sound...

Re: "The" RM 1999
Very interesting, and a very plausible theory. Shame you missed it, that would have been a cool one to own. Even if it wasn't Lake's and had actually been Giles', it still would have been the only Rickenbacker to grace a Crimson record. Except that Giles didn't play a Rick on a Crimson record. The ...

Re: "The" RM 1999
I was trying to get the money together for an RM that was quoted as "ex Gregg Lake" back in 1981 shortly after losing my beloved ex Gibb bass DH 163. This "Lake" bass was in a shop in Oldham called Rock island which was a sister shop of the Guitar Player shop in Rochdale. (This ...

Re: Stainless Steel vs. Nickel on Rotosounds
I use the Roto hybrid gauge (40-100) exclusively, and I adore them. They are a little harder on the finger tips, but you get used to it. They also don't last as long as some other strings, they sound perfect right out of the box and for a few days after that, really good for a couple of weeks after ...

Re: Stainless Steel vs. Nickel on Rotosounds
I haven't tried the nickel, too happy with the sound of the sound of the steel to change anything. But I do use the hybrid gauge (40-100) and adore them. Just a brighter string, but not so light as to loose all of the low end. Hope this helps.

Re: "The" RM 1999
Concerning the color of Chris Squire's bass, the story as I heard it goes, fireglo, flower stickers, sanding and refin, reflective wallpaper, intense sanding and refin to current cream color, with instruction from luthier to not stick anymore stuff to it that needs to be sanded off, because the bass...

Re: In The Wake Of Poseidon
Big KC fan here, especially Court, Poseidon, and the Wetton years. Peter did play an RM FG on this album, but it sound like Greg might have turned him on to Rotosound rounds, too bright for flats for my ear. Also, though Greg only did vocals on the record, most of the songs were written well before ...

Re: GC Rickenbacker 4001S Special?
The things that strike me as special about this one are the matte finish and the fact that every one is supposed to be made with figured maple (something I wish RIC would do with all Mapleglos.) Also, regarding how ill-informed GC employees tend to be about Rics, it pians me. I do not work at a &quo...

I now work at Guitar Center, and there is no way I'll be able to afford one of these. It really is a tease.

Re: 1977 4002 in Mapleglo
Very cool. Looking forward to seeing the progress. I hope everything's OK out there after Sandy. And my curiosity will be yet another incentive to stay prompt and healthy with my payments to help fund such an undertaking (as though the prospect of my own aquisition weren't incentive enough )

Re: Reissue Bass?
I'd sell a kidney for one. But they'd have to do what they've done with all reissues and make it available in all RIC colors to get the best profit margin I think. I'd also love this same hypothetical bass in a new and FAR more accurate Chris Squire signature model with stereo wiring like his...

Re: THOUGHT I'D SHARE THIS VID...
Glenn was big for me too. The album Stand Up is really a great piece of work. I love Glenn's deep, warm tone and melodic playing, and the songs don't suck either! Tull is my all time favorite band. Though Ian is the big influence for me (flute/vocals/guitar) the incredible bass in the band never es...

Re: An issue of incompatibility. Input requested.
Wow, wasn't even thinking about my hand. I'm sure that's part of the issue. My thumb's about in the middle, but a little in front of my hand (towards the headstock) rather than right behind it as it ought to be. The "proper" position has always made my hand hurt. I wear my bass pretty high...
