Re: The 4005XC finally made it to Ozland
These are much easier to string if you do one string at a time. I use Chromes too, but it's the set with two lighter gauges in it so that the strings are more balanced tension-wise. No weird overtones noticed though.

Re: 4003S/5
RIC hasn't made any in awhile, and hasn't decided if they'll continue making them or not in the future. I've got one, and it's the best sounding passive 5-string I have. 500k pots all around and .022uF tone caps really improved the tonal clarity.

Re: The good old days
4003's made during that era had an oversized neck pickup route that will likely let the neck flex where it transitions to the body when another 40 lbs of string tension is added. There use to be a hack out there converting 4003's to 5-strings with mixed results because he didn't fill that route with...

Re: 4004cii/5
The stock pots in these basses actually measured 175k ohms, which is mud tone central. Running two pickups through one volume control is also tone suicide with the mid freq cut that results with the stock wiring. VVT or Balance/Volume/Tone Delivers MUCH better tone.

Re: Babicz RIC Bridge
I don't see how bolting that relatively large part on top of a stock tailpiece could ever get good action. I've got the new V2 tailpiece on both my newwe Ricks, and adjustability is great.

Re: 4030 Short Scale bass
I picked up one of these a few months ago from Willcutt Guitars, and it has become my #1. The fretboard is Richlite, and has the same FWI's as 4003's. The pickups are indeed the same ones used in the 4005XC, only with black powder coated hi-gain covers. The bridge and strap buttons are also powder c...

Re: New 4003 question
The new DA rod in RIC basses is not replaceable without removing the fingerboard. Just like everyone elses basses now. I have 3 RIC basses with this rod, and have had no issues.

Re: Best pot values for Toasters?
HiGains are half as dark, and more present and bright, even up to 1MEG pot. Reissue Toaster is crazy present and bright and only needs a 250k pot. 500 and 1MEG make it sound too thinned out for bass. Squire, Rutherford, McCartney, etc. all had 500k tone pots in their Toaster equipped basses, and th...

Re: My R Tailpiece Broke
I've had a few Rick 12's over the years, and none of the tailpieces ever failed. I know people with dozens of them that have never had one break. When one does fail, the owner often goes on public forums looking for a free one, then complains when they don't get one claiming they all break. Like any...

Re: Best pot values for Toasters?
Single coil and humbucking pickups almost universally use 500k pots for tone controls. Volume pot specs are usually 250k for single coil pickups, and 500k for volume. These standardized specs were also observed by Rickenbacker up until the early 2000's when they went to a standardized 330k pot that ...

Re: Checkerboard Binding
Ben, the reason I ask this question is that there are a couple of morons over at TalkBass perpetuating the idea that checkered binding is now printed on, based on an online photo of a current walnutglo 4003. Another member has shown a photo of a section of binding on his CB 4003 that he was able to ...

Checkerboard Binding
So...Is checkerboard binding still made with the alternating black&white binding, or is it...printed on in some way?

Re: Saddles Keep Moving - 2001 4003s
Since this is a newer style V2 bridge, my fix does not apply. Given that each of the saddles on the V2 bridge has a pair of height adjustment screws that fit neatly into their own slots on the baseplate, and with a fair amount of downward string force, I don't see how the saddles could vbrate. Now i...
