Exactly. Rest your thumb on the edge of the fretboard and play right over the neck pickup, or even further up the neck... nice, soft upright-style tone.

Re: Fingernails and Bass Playing?

I read an interview with Geddy Lee years ago, if my memory serves me, where he said that he sometimes uses the nail on his middle finger to pick. I may be mis-remembering though... Yep. The technique is to group all three fingers (index/middle/ring) together as a unit, and strike into the bass and ...

Great-looking bass and a great deal to boot.

Nice going, congrats!

Re: 4003 Deadspot Issue

Very interesting... I'm sure I've experienced this, but haven't cataloged it mentally as an issue... makes perfect sense, though. There's an entire area of the physics of sound dedicated to active sound suppression, and it utilizes sympathetic and opposing frequencies and wavelengths to literally ca...

Re: 4003 Deadspot Issue

As far as "all basses have dead spots". Well I have six other basses (including a Cheyenne ii) from various manufacturers & I have no dead spot issues with any of them, lucky me! I have basses--Rics very much included--that I could claim have no dead spots. But they do, every guitar d...

Re: 4003 Deadspot Issue

I had the exact same issue on my 4003FL. Truss rod tweaks did nothing. But as part of a switch-over to black plastic and hardware, I got a set of black tuners that happened to be considerably lighter weight than the stock set. Shazaam, no more dead spot. I mean from a physics standpoint, the dead s...

Re: Advice Needed Please

And try a spray of contact cleaner before getting a whole new jack. It could just be dirty... +1 It doesn't take much foreign material or oxidation to blow a sound connection. A bit of very fine emery cloth (sandpaper w/cloth backing) wrapped around a 1/4" jack, inserted, and twisted (pencil o...

That's funny... I've always thought of that plate as an "input jack plate," but you're right... it would be "output," wouldn't it?

Added my basses

Howdy all, I added my Ric basses to the registry... well, I added four; the fifth was already there as a "collected" serial number/info. There was no option for me to edit it, and the "contact admin" link was a dead URL. If someone who can do so wishes to update it, it's s/n OL81...

Re: Favorite Bassists

David Ellefson from Megadeth is a bassist that I've come to appreciate recently. He had some pretty sweet basslines that didn't always just follow the guitar. +1 for Ellefson... solid, tight, and often very groovy... Peace Sells?! C'mon, that's an awesome bass riff! Megedeth is probably my favorite...

Re: Toaster and Horseshoe pickup questions

Sounds like the consensus is essentially that guitar and bass toaster pickups are interchangable, to the degree that they mount correctly and have enough lead for their respective position(s). I've never actually looked at the pickup portion of a Horseshoe pickup, prior to the one featured in the &q...

Re: checker binding years

That '64 is outstanding. I've been a Ric bass fan since the early 80's, obviously way, way before ebay, etc. My point in referencing that is that I've probably only seen two 60's basses for sale in my entire life, prior to ebay. I suppose if I guy was looking, he could have contacted a vintage music...

Toaster and Horseshoe pickup questions

Ok, if I'm not mistaken, the Horseshoe pickup is the same for all Rics... lap steels and basses, specifially; correct me if I'm wrong. Is the same true of the Toaster pickup? Specifically, is the Ric toaster pickup the same on a guitar as on a bass? And if so, am I correct in assuming the neck picku...

Thanks to you both; it only makes sense, but I wanted to get some "expert" opinion as well.
