Kelvin,That period of Australian improv and design is really interesting to me. I'm going to look for a Maxim when I return to Aust. There are a couple of posts about Maxims on the HSGA forum. Regards, DM

Kelvin, That senario was not all that uncommon before the economic boom around 1965-70. When I was a kid, late fifties early sixties, there were a lot of stratocaster copies around Sydney too. They were usually made in the shed at the bottom of the backyard. People were living on 20 bucks a week, th...

Pierre, It is too bad that there is so little response on this forum, especially when one considers how popular Ricky steels have become recently. You will probably do better over on the steel guitar forum but you will have to go through the registration stuff. It seems that musicians shun anything ...

Matt, I don't want to sound like a know-all, but that guitar was not such a great buy. One thing to remember is that they always look better in photographs. If you want a student model that looks nice consider the Oahu Tonemaster, they turn up for that kind of money in nice condition and can sound g...

Merc, Nice looking guitar. If I have my facts right Rickenbacher gave up a lot of metal in the early forties to the war effort. That included the chromed brass plates, and the high compression molds that the bakelite was formed in. All the post-war bakelites were made from old stock. You have the wi...

Kevin, You have a wonderful early Frying Pan there. Richard can give you specifics, but it looks early 30s to me. If you tune it and play an A6th chord, you will conjure up the ghost of Dorothy Lamour in a sarong. Aloha, David.

Dave, A Ric as you describe is pretty rare and is definitely worth 500, but you are going to hear from people more expert than I. Don't wait around. Grab it. Aloha, David.

There is a parallel dialog on the steel guitar forum just now that says Rusty Young plays a Silver Hawaiian. Considering the yellow tone of the picture, it looks like it could be just that. Aloha, David.

John, You are fortunate in having such a direct connection with Hawaiian music era. What you will discover is that the Hawaiian tunings usually go up from standard. That's where the seventh string comes in. You can add the missing lower tones. You may not get the real potential out of that amp. Try ...

Robert, I have used West System epoxy for repairs. With cracks I used it fairly thin, but to rebuild areas of bakelite I thickening it to a stiff paste with coloidal silica called Cabosil. In this case the finish is the fiddly part because sanded epoxy does not look like sanded bakelite. I should ad...

Richard, I'm a novice, so I can't help beyond contributing the serial # C863 of my B6. On the subject of cataloging: Are any of the Rick books worth buying, from the Hawaiian model point of view? I don't want to buy a book that is 99% spanish guitars. Regards,DM
