Re: Defretting a Rickenbacker bass?

First, sorry for your loss. How can we help you keep an eye out for it -- do you have a serial #? Second, do you mind sharing your luthier's approach to defretting the bass? PegHead in Hamilton ON did a fabulous job. Off white veneer filler that matched the aged white binding. More of a satin...

Re: 4004 5string conversion

It’s a real versatile bass. W/the bridge p/u at 2 1/4” (+\-) and all the pull pot options it’s reminiscent of a EB musicman :)

4004 5string conversion

My 4004l 4/2/5 conversion originally made by Dane Wilder :D Here it is in its current state w/HB-1’s jockeyed around. One placed roughly in a jazz bass bridge position. Great playing and sounding 5er. V/V/T w/pull pot taps 8) 540F46D2-3DF5-4B3F-BFCB-A933695DFC75.jpeg A7EFD2D9-C01A-4DFD-85D9-B7C45CE4...

Re: Defretting a Rickenbacker bass?

I was in the exact same situation as you. I had my 1980 4001 jet glo defretted by a luthier.. best fretless ever. It blew my ‘88 4003fl out of the water. So much so we parted ways  recently the 4001 was stolen and I’m now fretless-less  I say: “mod-it,play it,love it” Others will chime in...

"REDSTAR 8 ????"

So in my quest for an 8 string Rick a couple of years ago I came across a picture of an all red 4003s8 the seller reffered to as "redstar" and it was going for $11 000 or something crazy like that. What of this "redstar 8" Did someone buy it? Are they in the forum? gotta see thos...

Re: Rickenbacker bass with effects

Anyone got a good way to simulate the slurpy bass sounds on "No Quarter" by led Zep? An early key bass synth? Anyone know what JPJ used on this track?

Lollar Toasters ??

I've got a set of Lollar toaster style pickups in a custom made 4005 inspired 8 string. I think they sound awesome but don't really have a basis for compairison. Has anyone used these as replacements? Other opinions on the Lollar toaster? Considering another pair for future 4001 project :D

Re: John Paul Jones' mystery bass

Yes, and I've read interviews where JpJ stated he was trying to go the opposite direction tonally from Squire and Entwistle. so the cape and the Rick would be a confusing paralell. Good thing he switched to blouses and fenders :D

Re: Walking With Rita

Awesome job sir. I always think of Pauls playing as very "upright", especially when he walks like a master. I find he plays almost "horn like" phrases as well, like the intro and outro. His bass lines are almost like complete Big Band composistions?? :D Love pmac's approach and y...

Re: John Paul Jones' mystery bass

I love those velvet trousers...especially Page's green ones...so cool! And...is that a cape that JPJ is wearing? That's pretty flamboyant for Jones. Both the Ric bass & I think the cape is a first for Jonsey! Ive never seen another pic of him wearing a cape. It's too bad that he decided to lose...
