Re: Roll your own?

You can build a kit with some moderate prior experience with working on tube amps. The main thing is safety of course. These have voltages in them that can kill you if you aren't careful, and given the time a kit takes to make, your construction of it will likely not be done in all one go. So you ne...

Re: Toasters vs high gains

Generally speaking, in comparison to a pickup with ceramic magnets, a pickup with alnico magnets will have a smoother transition throughout the frequency range that the pickup can amplify with less frequency peaks and dips. It will also generally have smoother highs and less prominent lows when comp...

Re: Only Toasters On The 12 Strings

I'm with you on the 12's - toasters all the way. I like both on the 6's. I also like both on the basses. I like flatwounds on both too, but also like nickel rounds too.

Re: Toasters vs high gains

What are the differences, if any, between toasters and high gain pickups, assuming similar windings? I am not a strong believer in many of the things some people believe have a big effect on the tone of an instrument, especially a solid body electric. But the electrical components definitely do. Th...

Re: Hi-gain pickup dimensions

The standard humbucker is wider than the Rickenbacker pickups for sure. For length I think they are close. I'd have to measure one to be completely sure, but the garage is cold and its late. If no one else comments, I can get you some measurements over the weekend. The Rickenbacker hi gain pickups, ...

Re: 350V63 neck shape

The neck on the 350V63 is narrow, and the neck is deeper than some other Rickenbackers that I've played such as my 1989 230, so I suppose it is like a C shape and probably a bit less flat than the 660 I would guess, though I've never played one of those. The thing that bothers me the most about the ...

Re: I Just Stopped By To Say Hello

Welcome back Brian! Hope life is treating you fair? Seems like a bunch of people have stopped coming to forums in general...probably spending time on the facebook groups instead. I prefer a forum as everything is saved and quickly accessible, whereas on facebook it just scrolls down and everyone for...

Re: Toaster coil sound without the cover

All of RIC's stamped pickup covers are brass, which is non magnetic, and therefore has no effect on the pickup's magnetic field. Brass has a lot of copper and is more conductive, and the more conductive, the more eddy currents are generated on the covers which resist the AC signal, so you get muddy...

Re: 4000 pickup rewind

Sergio Silva is always a good choice and he is on this forum and even has his own section.

Other places that rewind are Seymour Duncan and Lindy Fralin, among others. They key is that you want 44 gauge wire, probably polysol wire, and it needs to be wound to around 8k-9k.

Re: Setzer Gretsch models

Boy the Gretsch line up is hard to figure out from top to bottom, isn't it ? Two things, wow that County Club is sweet, and did our original poster wanted a tone knob insted of a switch ? I was looking into the Setzer Hot Rod, which comes with a pickup switch and a volume control and no tone knob. ...

Re: Bell & Howell Filmosound 385 Projector Amp

I scored a complete Bell & Howell 385 Filmosound Specialist projector at the swap meet last weekend. Amazing 1950's build quality. Under the 16 mm projector it has an 18 watt tube amp with 2 6v6's, 2 12ax7's, a 5y3 & a 5879. The Schumacher transformer dates to late June of 1956. The origina...

Re: Which caps are best?

So I guess I'll just have to try different .022 caps and see what I like best. That will be fun! Hopefully not too expensive though! I think I will stay away from vintage as I keep reading that the values drift over the years. It will be interesting to see if I'll be able to hear an easily noticeab...

Re: Which caps are best?

When you talk about any part in a guitar or an amp, the only way to really test it is to combine the electronic tests with actual listening tests, since we are talking about something that produces sound. With the electronic tests, you can find out which material used or style of construction gets y...

Re: Choosing between RIC Hi-Gain, Toaster, or CA pickup

If it was up to me I wouldn't use a vintage style toaster on a 4003 because the pickup spacing is 1" from the end of the fingerboard instead of 1/2" like the 4001 that would have originally come with the toaster. Using a stock vintage style toaster in a 4003 would result in a quieter picku...
