Re: And so it begins ....

I've built several wiring harnesses for Dale F. Do you have a pic of your new harness?

Re: Why does my bass sound this way?

Very interesting! So then, do the 4004 basses have this problem, too? Yep, and it's a real tone killer too. That's why I rewire them with either Balance/Volume/Tone, or Volume/Volume/Tone. Either way, I also use a pair of push-pull pots to short either of the HB1 coils for a good single coil tone a...

Re: Why does my bass sound this way?

Michael's bass isn't wired like a standard 4003, Dane. He doesn't have individual controls for each pickup: it all routes through a master Vol & Tone. Ahh...I missed that detail. That's the problem then. Since both pickups will always be at the same volume, there will always be a mid scoop/volu...

Re: Why does my bass sound this way?

You haven't said whether you run both volume controls at the same level when you experience a "mid scoop". If you are, then back off one of your volume controls a bit, and the sound will become fuller. I wouldn't worry about the pickups being out pf phase with each other. Wiring in these i...

How bout this? 5D516032-B8FF-478E-82DA-92F4882D37C4.jpeg Your pickups are running in parallel. Any time you run a pair of pickups into a master volume or separate volumes at the same level, you will experience a mid scoop caused by phase cancellation. This is why I always run separate volume contro...

Re: Need help with 4003S Bridge Pickup

Vince.....The ground wire/shield in your pickup lead has broken. You need to remove some of the grey insulation (half an inch or so) then solder it to the eylet screwed to the back of the pickup. When you're done, glue the wire by it's shielding to the baseplate near that eyelet. This will act as a ...

If the bass is the newer mosel S5, then it's probably still under warranty.

Re: Restoring a '75 4001.

After you dowel the old tuner holes, instead of just drilling the new holes to fit the bushings (what most manufacturers and luthiers would do)...first drill small pilot holes (with a drill press) then drill holes that fit the bushings ONLY as deep as they need to be, then drill the rest of the way ...

Re: Restoring a '75 4001.

The Grover tuners that are on the bass now likely required having the original tuner shaft holes to be drilled oversize. You'll need to dowel these holes and drill new ones for the new RIC tuners. When you put these dowels in, DON'T force them or you'll split the headstock. Make them a slight interf...

Re: Babicz FCH Rickenbacker Bass Bridge

This looks clunky and very much like an add-on part. At $169.00 it's WAY overpriced. He should have designed it as part of a compete assembly without a mute for that price. At only $21 less than the new V2 from RIC, this makes no sence.

Re: What DON'T you like about your Rickenbacker bass?

This is because with both volumes controls at the same level in a 2 pickup guitar/bass, there is a phase cancellation in the midrange. Drop either volume a little and it will go away. Adding a .01uF capacitor to either circuit will eliminate this effect at full volume.

Re: What DON'T you like about your Rickenbacker bass?

If you don't like a bunch of features about ANYTHING, why have it? :? I'd prefer a narrower nut width like Jazz bass That's the exact reason why I've never owned a J-Bass. I know I'm in the minority of bassists who don't like the J-Bass neck. The width at the nut is too skinny for me and I hate the...

Re: What DON'T you like about your Rickenbacker bass?

Band practice yesterday. I was playing my 78 4001 BG. It has Bartolini pickups. I have thought before that they could be brighter, and comparing it to an active Ibanez one of the guitarists brought made that clear. I'm thinking it needs 500K volume pots. I would also add to that a change in tone ca...

Re: Single truss rod?

I've heard it's not removable though. It isn't removable, but the neither is anyone else's truss rod. One of the main reasons the older dual rods might need to be removed was to be straightened and reinserted when they stopped working properly. This isn't a problem that would occur with the new rod...

Re: Single truss rod?

I've got one in my 4003SM CB (satin mapleglo checkered binding) and it seems to work just fine. Only adjusted it once since I got the bass last year. It's a true two way adjustable rod, and is currently being used in a pilot program with some of the limited run models that have been coming out since...
