"R" tailpiece question: Sixties vs. Eighties specs

Post by kiramdear »

Just a quick one: Can you replace the "R" of one era for another? I want to make sure my '82 tailpiece will fit on a '65 330. Thank you kindly :D

Thanks, Jeff, that was my belief, too. I'm sure it could fit on there, but apparently there is some discrepancy in the specs.

The top piece appears interchangeable, according to the potential buyer's observation, however the end piece is thicker and provides more lift from the surface on the sixties' version.

Can anyone verify or disprove that? :?

Unfortunately, I can't help you there as both of my R tailpieces are one month apart from each other (Feb "67 4005WB and March '67 330) .

The"R" portion from the sixties is much heavier and thicker than '80s/current production. I have seen these side by side. The mount that screws to the body I have not been able to compare so I don't know if these are interchangable. I have no idea as if one is stonger or sounds different than the other as the materials may be different.

The vintage "Rs" and the brackets are substantially heavier and better made than current production.
The holes for the bracket are also different... perhaps even from bracket to bracket.

Thanks, Dan. You're just what this discussion needed. Look how much beefier the old one is!

I don't really see much difference in the 71s I have compared to the 80s in regard to the screw hole positioning.
Maybe someone else could post a pic of 60s v 80s.
I can't see the pics from the post above.
