Changing RIC 12's - update to my order

Post by jdogric12 »

I searched for my special order for changing strings and it seems I have a typo in an old post, so I thought I'd post a fresh account to set the record straight. This works for R tailpieces, and is designed to maximize efficiency navigating the slotted headstock. Some people like to cut them all at once and use masking tape or a capo, which I think is just silly. But who am I? Anyway, here's what I do, if anyone cares. Hope this helps.

1 is the low E, 12 is the outer high E.

12 off/on
10 off
11 off/on
10 on
8 off
9 off/on
8 on
7 off/on
Halfway done!
6 off/on
5 off
4 off/on
5 on
3 off
2 off/on
3 on
1 off/on
You may now reward yourself with the vice of your choice.

Jason,

I never understood the reasoning for removing all the strings on any guitar for restringing only. I always started at the low E string, but I will try your system if you think it helps in working with the slotted headstock. Today will be my first RIC 12 restringing.

The main objective is to get the string covering each slotted string out of the way, and never have more than two strings off at a time. A trapeze won't let you do this, making the slots difficult, since slotted strings are covered by a string from a different course.

After years of trial and error, I stumbled into this method two or three string changes ago. And you are right, this is by far the easiest way to restring a Ric 12. I believe the kids now call it FroYo.

You probably only need to change the plain strings from time to time! Buy a bunch of single 10's and 13's and you'll be set for a good long while. And you should know you can extend the time those plains will last by wiping the strings clean after each time you play. Especially if your pH is super acidic like mine.
