Case for 381/12v69

I just purchased a 2000 381/12v69 that is in need of a new case. Would I order one directly from Rickenbacker or from POTR? Are the silver ones obscenely expensive?

Depends how you define expensive.

Personally I find that $250-$300 isn't that bad when the guitar won't fit in ANY other off-the-shelf case.

You should be able to order this from POTR as a special order.

Hi Robert -

A few years ago I got a 381 that I needed a case for (it came with a heavy-as-all-get-out flight case that I could barely lift); I contacted RIC and Brendan Duff in Customer Service told me that I could order one through any authorized dealer.

The model number (from my emails two years ago) is part no. 94560. PoTR does not list that model on their website but they can probably order one. The MSRP per RIC is $350.

Cases for a 381 are not common in the aftermarket but I was able to get one on eBay a couple of years ago for $279.99. Whether that price range is "obscenely expensive" depends on your point of view; (from Wikipedia):

Also, bear in mind -- in my opinion, a 381 without a case is devalued more than the $350 it costs to get a replacement case.

In other words - if you ever choose to sell the guitar you'll more than get your money back on buying a case for it.


(p.s. did you pick up the New Jersey husk?)

My 381 actually came with a silver hard shell case, but the outside of the case is in poor condition and one of the latches was broken so that it wouldn't lock. Now that I had the latch replaced for $30.00 at a luggage repair store, the case is functional. The inside of it looks new. So I don't think I'll need to spend $300 plus on a new one, at least not right now. Thanks to all for the advice, though. :D
