TI Flatwound 12-string set

Post by Scoogs »

Hey all. I didn't want to make yet another thread on the topic but my search for this answer has come up empty. I've been waiting to order a set of the TI flatwound 12 string set from POTR. Noticed the pack is exclusive to them. But I figured there MUST be somewhere else I can find them!!... Sadly no. So I figured I'd ask here - is there any hidden website I'd be able to order this set? If not, would anyone venture a guess as to how long it takes for POTR to get these bad boys back in stock?

Thanks fellas!

As far as I know, no one else carries them. I spoke to Chris Clayton at POTR at the end of December, and he said he'd have them back in stock by January 11th. Perhaps POTR is still recovering from the holiday rush.

I use Pyramid flats on my 12 string and it sounds fantastic.

Just another option.

I have a couple packs of Pyramid flats on the way but I think I've psyched myself out of putting them on.

I've used both TI and Pyramid flats for my guitars in the past and truthfully I've always preferred the TI's. And in regards to the tension issue with Pyramids on Rics, I just don't want to mess around with my new C63 (whether or not that argument holds true). Especially considering how time consuming restringing these things are

I'd rather just wait for the TI's. I'm just so impatient!

Hi,
I just customized them by myself! I simply bought every string separately.
Maybe this is easier in Germany, because they are austrian made!
I agree that the TI`s are much smoother to play.

I used to buy them from these folks as individual strings, but don't know if they still sell them that way or what they cost these days. The current sets were put on my twelves in 2010 and still sound great after an awful lot of playing.

I gave that a go, Todd. Inflation knows no bounds these days. Following POTR's gauge set, check this out... Nearly $50 to put it together yourself.

Wow! Good thing they last so long. I certainly won't be in a hurry to change mine. The last time I did it was after the existing set had been on for about two years. I guess I expected the new ones to sound different and better. They sounded the same and made me wonder why I bothered to change them. Then again, my Gibson fretless bass has the same set of Guild tape-wounds that it has been wearing since 1975 and they still sound great, so the TIs have a long way to go to set the record.

Great strings!

Last time I was at POTR, I bought a few sets as well as some 6 string sets. They last so long that I haven't had to use them all so I have some extra sets if someone needs them and can't wait.

As an alternative I can recommend the gauges in the light Dean Markly electric 12 set. I don't think the DMs are still being made but I began building sets from singles from GHS flats and D'Addario plains (with a .022 plain for the low E). This works for me with both my 330/12 and my Danelectro DC 12

The DM gauges are:

2581 LT .009/.009 .011/.011 .016/.008 .024/.010 .032/.016p .042/.022

I play .010s on my 6 strings and find that gauge too hard to play on a 12 string.

I would respectfully recommend that instead of the 16 plain for the unison G string, use an 18 or 19 wound so that it will intonate properly with the octave g string on a six saddle bridge. That's what I do - as listed above - a custom 9's set, but out of D'Addario singles instead of Dean Markley singles. Dean Markley's are good strings, I just have better luck with availability with the D'Addario's.

Actually, that is where I deviate, going for an 18 or 17. No problems with intonation on the Ric and the Dano has a 12 saddle bridge. I don't use Dean Markley strings. As said, I follow the gauges, for the most part and use a combination of GHS flats (or D'Addario Chromes) and D'Addario plains.

It can be a pain ordering these and the wait (I'm in Australia where this is not so easily organised) but having the right strings is always worth it.
