650 neck change thickness question.

Post by BB11 »

Hello all. Can anyone shed light when Rickenbacker make the neck on the 650 chunkier and made the heel thicker? Thanks. It us very hard to find one tplat, not sure how chunky chunky is. I play a Martin with a low profile neck and 1 3/4 nut as well as a Larrivee parlor, also a slim necl with the wider nut.

My hunch is that the 650 with the "chunky" neck might not be that chunky.

I also plat an epi casino coupe with a thin neck a 1 11/16 nut. I really prefer the slightly wider 1 3/4 nut. Since once I cind a C or A that i feel is a good deal i would like to make sure the profile will suit me.

Thanks for replies.

Unfortunately, I don't have any information regarding changes to the neck. I can tell you that my '93 650S has a much, much flatter profile than a Gibson LP '50s style neck, despite having nearly the same width at both the nut and the 12th fret (within margin of error for my eyes and tape measure). If you like wider, flatter necks you're on the right track.

Thanks, that is great information. I think '93 was the first or second year so it would be the thinner neck. I hsve a feeling either will be ok. Thanks again.

I've owned two 1993er 650D's which had a flat neck.
After that I played a 2002 and a 2007 model of the 650d and 650s which had the thicker neck.

How thick is the "thicker neck" If you compare it to an acoustic let' say?

thanks

I have played acoustics with a wide variety of neck dimensions, even from the same brand and sometimes model. What acoustic is your standard for comparison?

I play a Martin with a low profile neck, this is not as low profile as Larrivee or Taylor but it is a nice, for me, profile. The Martin Modified V caused hand issues and I had to sell a guitar I really loved due to that. I cannot imagine that the 650 will be any wider than the Martin and it is a 1 3/4 nut as well. Since they are scarce I wanted to check prior to bringing one in..

Thanks again

I have a custom made Martin with a low profile neck, I used to have an Larrivée LV-19 Special Vine Edition, and I also own a Taylor NS-62ce (I used to have a 512ce) so I am quite familiar with those neck shapes. I never played a 650 AFAIR but I did own an early '00s 660/12 and a 660 75th Anniversary for several years. I was easily able to adapt to any of those necks, just like I do all the various basses I have owned over the decades, 4 and 5 string, and 30" scale to 35" scale lengths. Regarding the acoustic guitar necks, I find the Martin low profile neck to be thinner front to back than either the Larrivée or Taylor necks, but perhaps that may be due to its 1 11/16" nut (my Martin is a very mixed bag of features/dimensions that sort of defy easy placement in Martins model designation line-up) compared to the 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" of those other guitars.

If you do get a 650 it would be cool for you to let us know the thickness of the neck at various points along it. 8)

650 neck change thickness question.

Re Neck shapes --- I have a 1996 "Atlantis" 650-A and the neck is chunkier at the Nut end than a modern 650-C "Colorado", I use to own around 2006.

Using this "Fender Neck chart" as an explanation, I would say the Atlantis has higher shoulders, as in #1 in the picture, whereas the modern 650-C neck is probably more like #3 or even #5.

I also currently own a 660-12 and while the width across is same as the 650 Atlantis, the 660 series is definitely flatter on the curvature, similar to shape #5, with less pronounced shoulder depth. That's how I would describe these wider-neck Rickenbacker models.

Jeff, that's a very comprehensive chart of neck profiles you dug up. 8) Much better than the abbreviated one I used of classic Fender neck shapes.
