650 color

Post by BB11 »

I have located a couple of 650, new, made in 2012, so 1 year warranty left. Prices are close on each. 1 mapleglo, 1 Ruby and 1 midnight blue. I would think the maple would wear better (nicks and scratches) but I am pretty easy on my things. The blu looks interesting.

Any experience with different colors (and yes, I know it is personal, this would be over the Internet).

Thanks

Hi Joel - welcome to the Forum.

I own a few 650C Colorado Rics in various finishes and colours - nice guitars, under-rated in my opinion.
The Mapleglo will look a bit anaemic to start off with, but will mature into a beautiful honey-gold colour over time if left exposed to the air. Also, as you say, dings and scratches will be less noticeable than on a painted one.
For instant appeal, I would favour the Midnight Blue, which I think looks really sharp with the chrome hardware and black TRC.

I just saw this one today while cruising online. Turquoise is a rare colour for a 650C. It is not a 625 mind you!

The current Midnight Blue is a nice shade. I have a 340 MID. I haven't seen Ruby in person, but it looks very nice in some photos I've seen. I've heard it described as close to Fender Candy Apple Red. Maplego has never been my thing - and keep in mind that only the older conversion varnish will amber. The new finish isn't supposed to change. I don't remember the year of the change, but I'm sure you can find it by searching here - or some kindly forum member might post it here for you.

I haven't heard of any particular issues with either of the paints so it mostly comes down to - are you red hot, cool blue, or "clear"? (Sorry, MapleGlo fans.). :)

The Turquoise 650 in the craigslist ad is a bit unusual, as the 650A (Atlantis) typically has a solid maple neck that runs the length of the body.

Here are a few photos of a typical 650A on the rickbeat.com "Models" page, with thanks and appreciation to Bjorn Eriksson for hosting that great site!

The one on craigslist has a completely turquoise body, front and back, and the back of the neck is also turquoise.

Agreed. It is not a 650A, but rather a 650C.

Turquoise came back as a finish again in the modern era with the 650 Atlantis which started in 1992 and lasted till about 2002. But as we see a few Cs were done as well before RIC ended the run of TURQ around 2004ish...

I had never seen a Turquoise 650C before - which is why I shared it.

Oh and as to the question of the original poster above... Don't forget good old Jetglo. I think the 650C looks great in JG myself.

I didn't know that Turquoise was an option for the 650C - I have never seen one other than the one in the craigslist ad (which has been offered elsewhere previously, also, I think).

Thanks for the information, Brian!

Happy to share the info. There are two TURQ 650 Colorados in the register but no PICS alas.. They only seem to have done them in TURQ in the two years after they discontinued the Atlantis. Alas no SN in that Craigslist advert so I can't add the images to the register.
But at least they will be here in this thread.

Last year, I missed out on a rare 650C Colorado 'Blue Boy' Ric for sale in London. But hey, they are all great guitars, regardless of colour - here are my two 'Colour of the Year' (COY) Ric 650Cs - one in Montezuma Brown and the other in Amber Fireglo:

Oh man, I dig that turquoise 650C! I've jonsed an Atlantis since they were introduced. I also agree that JG looks especially slick on these.
