RICKENBACKER 330 ON EBAY

I'm curious to know if the head stock is open (Pics 7 & 8) which would make stringing so much easier.

Has this been modified or were they made like this? :)

Welcome Rob. Yes, they made that change in the late 2000's. A lot of people love it for the reason you mentioned. I'm old school though and think it looks funny. I admit the first few times I ever changed strings on a Rick 12 there was a learning curve, but it's no problem for me since then... about 20 years now!
