My 340 needs a new nut
Hi, my 89 340/6 MG, owned since new by me, need a new nut , the grooves are too worn and I
could try the "baking soda and glue" trick, but feel she deserves better.
Anyone ever done this themselves?
I try to work on my own guitars if I can.
thanks

Re: My 340 needs a new nut
I think you can buy pre-slotted nuts so all you would need to do is do some profile work on the outside edges and perhaps deepening the slots a bit with the correct nut files.
Re: My 340 needs a new nut
Are the grooves worn down, or side to side, or both? Would a shim underneath not take care of it?
Re: My 340 needs a new nut
thanks, grooves are too low giving 1st fret buzz, how hard is it to take the old one out?

Re: My 340 needs a new nut
A gentle knock on it from one end with a screwdriver or small hammer should pop it right off.
Re: My 340 needs a new nut
Yep. If that doesn't do it, maybe blow a hair dryer on it for a minute at a medium-hot temperature to loosen the glue? Not too hot.
Re: My 340 needs a new nut
I made a new nut for my 340/12 to change the string spacing (tighter pairs and spread to maximum width) and it wasn't a big deal. I bought a set of nut files from an eBay seller which turned out to be a stack of small steel slabs like auto mechanic feeler gauges with teeth cut into one side like little saws (called the Norman Nut File System). They worked well and were substantially cheaper than the luthier's nut files sold by Stew-Mac, etc. I cut the blank from a scrap of epoxy/graphite mixture that I had sitting around, but you could buy a hunk of real nut stock or use all manner of hard materials. The good news is that they are cheap and pretty quick to make, so if you screw one up it's no big deal.
