NGD: 1995 660/6 Amber Fireglo

Post by Royce »

If I'm not playing it, I'm looking at it. This thing is amazing. It has more sustain than I've ever encountered in a solid body guitar before. I put light gauge Thomastic-Infeld flatwounds on it and they sound and feel great. I thought at first that the neck felt a little wide for me, but playing it regularly changed my mind. NOW I wish my other guitars necks were this wide. Go figure! :D

Interesting. The first 660-6 strings were supposedly introduced in 1998, after the 1000 Tom Petty 660-12 run was completed in 1997.

Given the 1995 date and the bound headstock, this might have been a custom order.

Beautiful instrument!

I LOVE bound headstocks!...I've been looking online and haven't come across another 660 quite like it yet.

Thanks Ron!

Hmm..I didn't know about the 660-6 timeline...interesting. The other thing that's odd about it is it has the Rick-O-Sound jack.

Inside the cavity, and underneath the TRC it says 1-42

You think it would be worth contacting Rickenbacker to see what they could tell me about it? (or do they not do things like that)

Royce :)

Oh no!...You were right!

I never heard of that model before!

My father LOVED Martin guitars. I remember when I was a kid, he HAD a Martin that had a ivory bridge and slotted headstock like that. Did they make any other models that had these features?

While your here: Is my 660 Fireglo or Amber Fireglo? The binding is a bit yellowed and the inlays are too. I have a 2015 4003 in Fireglo, and the 660 looks darker/redder than that.

I think your is a stock Fireglo. The inlays look pretty clear as does the checker binding (purfling, really), although it is, indeed, checker binding on the headstocl. :D However, it is hard to make a correct judgement from those tiny photos.

Thank you Jeff :)

The inlay around the body is white but the neck and headstock binding are a reddish/honey color. Interesting.

Re photos: When I was trying to post photos, I was told I could only have 500x500 size. I wish I could have made them bigger!

Does anybody know what year Amber Fireglo was first used, and would these be the "hot" toasters I have?

Id check with the usual suspects of refinishing before I checked with RIC. Larry Davis, Paul W, Dale F, etc. Heck, it might even be in an old thread on RRF!

AFG was the color of the year for 07, iirc.

Thanks Jason, I didn't think of that.

I'm sure Jeff is right about mine being Fireglo if Amber Fireglo wasn't till 12 years later. Fireglo sure has a lot of variations doesn't it?

Guys, I need some help. This is my first opportunity to register a guitar here (it's only been 11 years since I joined!) but when I tried, it says that serial number is in use already, and waiting for approval!? How can that be? Maybe I did something wrong? Let me know what you think.

Perhaps the previous owner is in the process of, or has already registered this guitar. Have you looked in the register for it?
