McCartney's 360/12

In the 80s, Paul McCartney was shown with a left-handed Rickenbacker 360/12WB with a reverse headstock. The photo of him holding the guitar is from the All The Best tv promo, from 1987. It popped up again in the video shoot for Queenie Eye (the rack photo is from this) in 2013.
I'm curious if anyone knows more about the story behind this instrument. Did McCartney buy it, or was it a gift? I asked Mark Arnquist and he didn't know anything about it, guessing that McCartney acquired it at some point after his time at Rickenbacker in the mid-1970s.
