660/12 wider necks

Hey guys,

Does anyone know when they started to produce the wider neck on the Standard 660/12 like the Tom Petty model ?

Well I bought a new Tom Petty Limited Edition in 1991 and I believe that was the start. It was TP that helped in the design of his guitar. There was a run of 1000 which included some left handed models and in a choice of Fireglo and Jetglo. The Fireglo models were in birdseye maple.

Andyeknobs, you’re correct. When mr. Petty was approached about a sig model, he requested a wider neck.
Originally called the TP model, after the initial run of 1000 TP’s were made, Rick continued to make them, calling them 660’s.

The only difference between a 660/12 and the Tom Petty Signature Edition, is the top pick guard.

The 660/6 is the same as above, but with six fewer strings.

How RIC finishes them these days is very different than back in the 1990s.

Now i have my 660/12 back and it has the wider neck!!
Originally it had the Hot Toasters which i changed into scatter wounds which sounds much better.
then i changed the strings to TI flat wounds and made a little setup. Now it is perfect for me.
still thinking about the vintage tone cap.

Does anyone know when they switched from the hot toasters to to he scatter wound toasters in 1999? I have a 660/12 FG that was made the 11th week of 1999, March if 1999. I have a 325/12v63 that has scatter wounds, but can’t recall the month it was made off hand.

Mike I am going to say the 7.4 k toasters showed up very close to December 1999. The historians may prove me wrong but I recall their introduction on the 425 and 450V63 reissues in December 1999 and also in the Carl Wilson signature model around May 2000. I suspect the Factory was checking them out prior to December 1999. John Hall where are you?

Does your toasters have phillips or slotted screws in the four corners? And do the black "toaster bars" have a round moulding dimple at each end (four in total)? Those can determine what you have, beyond the sound and output level of the pickups (or measuring them with an ohm meter).
