Just got this

Amp front 1.jpg
Found this in my guitar pusher's stash of amps. Had to have it. Is this a B9? The upright configuration of the chassis is different than other B9's I have seen in photos. I had a grounded cord installed and the large can-capacitor was not functioning well and had it bypassed and new caps installed. The tubes are all old RCA and Sylvanias.

There is absolutely no clean tone to this - It's overdrive all the way. I can back off the volume and clean it up a little, but not to the point where it's totally clean.
The OD is not objectionable at all so I'm not complaining - just curious if there is supposed to be any clean to it. Will replacing the 12AX7 with an AU or AT get me a little cleaner output?

try 12au7's and if it's too quiet, go for 12ay7s ..could also try actual different brands of power tubes as well, and a different speaker...

Thanks... I will try all of the above. Like I said, the distortion is not objectionable. However, I would like to get some kind of a clean tone out of it to start with and work from there.

I love old amps that have things written in them. It's always funny how important little things get lost over the years - like which tubes to use or how many ohms or what input outputs are which I once had an old Airline head that had something like 'don't plug into this input, you will be catch on fire'

Anyone who genuinely uses this statement, as does jwilli here, is my hero! :D
