TR-100

Tracy: Would you mind saying a few words about the Rickenbacker TR-100?
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I'm assuming you are refering to the TR100G, which was supplied as a piggyback style head, but was also available as a 2-12 combo. A straightforward, traditional transistor circuit, the models I've seen have built in reverb and footswitchable distortion. Amplifier itself is a real 100+ watts, the reverb is quite useable, but for the distortion, well, don't throw away your Tube Screamer just yet. Also, there seems to be, in all guitar models of this series, an obnoxious midrange peak that is hard to dial out. These amplifiers actually benefit from a little 'pre' amplifier processing. The transistors used in the power section are an unusual variety and not easily replaced, so be careful with thermal concerns (ventilate!).

The bass version of this amplifier (TR100B) is excellent right out the gate. Lots of headroom and the tone shaping is just magnificent! Both of these amps perform well, right down to 2 ohms, but better linearity can be had at 8 ohms with a sacrifice in power. Have fun!!
Show him the shirts, Adrian.
