Author insanity

Post by doctorwho »

This will probably appeal more to the academically inclined among us, but i had to share. I ran across this citation on PubMed when doing a search, and it has to be the craziest number of authors I have ever seen on a research paper:

I guess it could have been worse - they might not have listed the names in alphabetical order!

I always think that PubMed sounds like a place where one would say before every drink, "Here's to your health!" ...

People will probably only remember Aaltonen.

I sure hope they get a Nobel prize for this.

Does the number of authors relate in proportion to the level of plausible deniability?

I guess this has so many authors because they recognized all the people required to do the experiment (is this LHC-related?), but I have been taught that just performing an experiment doesn't entitle you to authorship in all cases. Of course the "rules" on that vary from lab to lab.

Ouch; I guess I'll never cite that work in one of my papers. We use a different reference style convention for author names and it would take a day just to reformat the reference citation.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?
