1964 Rose Morris 1997 (Pete Townsend owned?)

Post by scoobyw »

Hi all,

I am putting online my 1964 Rick, I have worked out my Dad and I bought her in 1987 in Belfast. She was bought previously from a guitar shop on Shaftsbury Avenue, London around 1969 - 1970 and brought to Belfast were it was kept by the owner until he died, this is when I bought it. I was told there were several for sale at the time and he chose the one with the trem option. It was then I was told about its previous owner which of course influenced my purchase as my dad and I bought several guitars back then, several owned by notable guitar players such as Rory Gallagher and Bill Wyman.

I have been trying to confirm these details re Townsend so was wondering if anyone on here had any pics or further info re his guitars of the time? Cant think of a better place, tried the Who site but to no avail.

I will attach a few pics of her asap, she is a stunning guitar with some nicks and scrapes, not surprising really. I am currently repairing the bottom E string Tuner which you will see in the pics, though these seemed to have been replaced professionally many years before I bought her. I have had her stored for the last 20 odd years, so thought it time to let her out for some air. I have to say she sounds stunning, warm yet chimes and wonderful with slide. Everything else on the guitar is original including the case.

Any advice and or info would be gratefully received, also happy to answer questions you might have.

Thank you in advance,

Scooby.

Hi Robert

That is one beautiful looking Rose Morris 1997 you have there.

As far as Townshend pictures are concerned there are loads of them online with his various Ricks - he used many different models including the 1993 (12 string) and the 1997 (2 pick-up like yours) and the 1998 (3 pick up). The best picture I've seen of him with a 1997 is the famous Union flag jacket one I've attached. I am sure others on here will be able to add more with the 1997....

Hi Robert, welcome ----cool Rose Morris!

Just judging by the guitar, i'd say it wasn't one of Mr. Townshend's.

On top of the obvious factors (like it's still in one piece!), he always had the Accent vibrato replaced with something else and he typically preferred 3-pickup 1998 models back then (though as in the picture above, he occasionally played 1997's ).

The red is so pronounced on your guitar! That is a feature common to many mid-64 Rose Morris Rics.

Hi Robert,I've spoken about that very guitar here ,its one of those ones that got away!

When i first saw that guitar in Sessions way back then it was only £299!

Your dad was always asking me about my old Gretsch 6120 anytime i occasionally ran into him in Bairds! :)
He wouldn't remember me though, haven't spoken to him in yonks.

That still is a lovely looking geet though.

Hi all , her jack plate number is DH101. Think I remember you re 6120, I always wanted one of them as I am a great fan of Eddie Cochran. Yes, its the same guitar from back in session, thought I would at last try and get to the bottom of its history. Sorry you missed it! Rob.
