Rose Morris 1995 Jan 64

Post by Dolan1980 »

Hi Guys

I am not at all a guitar expert but my mother has asked me to help sell her brothers guitar that was found when we cleared my grandmothers house as she went into residential care.

I thought it was just a case of sticking it on ebay but from all of the emails and interest I have had via ebay I think it deserves a little more research to ensure I am getting what it is worth, or indeed if I should sell at all.

The guitar belonged to my uncle who sadly passed away in 1967 and has been in its original case in my grandma's house every since, not even opened. The serial number is DA87 which I believe is Jan 1964. This date and condition appears to have caused the most interest on ebay and I was hoping someone on here might be able to help.

If anyone could help me get an idea of its value and if ebay is the correct place for it it would be greatly apprecited.

I originally thought it was a Rickenbacker 615 but was kindly pointed in the direction of Rose Morris 1995, I understand the didn't prove too popular in the UK so some were sent back to the US. I was told the Jan 1964 means it was one of the first over here so not sure if that makes a difference to how rare it is or it's value. I have been given a lot of information and had a few varying cash offers but if anyone can help on here I would be very greatful.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike

Welcome to the forum.

I am one of the people who wrote to you about the correct model designation for your guitar.

As far as value of your guitar is concerned, ultimately only the market can tell you what it's worth at this point in time. I would advise that you set the eBay reserve at the minimum you think your family would be happy with uplifted by the auction fees (which I assume is what you've done). Then wait and see whether the auction price gets there or not. You could accept an offline offer that achieves the same amount in net terms without the eBay/Paypal fees. If you only get bids/offers lower than you were hoping for then it would obviously be your call as to whether you would go lower.

I think it's difficult to set a guide value for the model 1995. You are right, the solid body six string was much less popular than the 1997/1998 hollow bodies. If it were an original 1964 1997/1998 in mint condition I think I'd be setting a mimimum value in the UK of around £6,000 (I say that as there was a beat up example which sold recently at open auction in the UK for just under £5,000). Unfortunately I'm not aware of any recent open market comparator for a 1995. However, I'd expect the value to be much lower as it would be much less attractive to most collectors than the models 1997/1998/1993 as they are the ones most famously associated with the British Invasion bands and are consequently in the highest demand. Given the excellent condition, my gut tells me that it ought to be in the £2k to £3k range but it's been a tough market lately.

Anyhow, all the best with the auction!

Ed

Thanks Ed

You have been very helpful. As you suggested we have it on what we would be willing to accept, and with the interest hopefully I will get a fair price.

Fingers crossed we will get what we wanted for it.

I am taking a load more detailed photo's for one of the ebay guys tonight showing the condition so if anyone on here would like to see them also please let me know and I could email you them.

You're welcome Mike.

More detailed pictures can only help you achieve the best possible price. Once you have the new pictures, I'd recommend that you embed them into your eBay listing. If you don't know how to do that, search youtube for "how to embed pictures into ebay listing" and you'll find plenty of simple tutorials on how to do it. This allows you to share large numbers of high definition pictures with potential buyers and, best of all, you don't have to pay eBay more fees to do it!

All the best Ed

+1 on the high definition photos, they really do help in a sale.

What Ed has related all seems pretty sensible to me. I know of one other Jan '64 example for sale at around £2500-2600 and it has been for sale for a very long time. It all depends on if you want a quicker sale and what you would like to achieve. It's certainly a very clean little guitar and Jan '64 is the one to have - coincidently, it is 64 serial numbers along from Macca's 4001S bass.

And welcome to the forum Mike!

Me again

I think after taking the close up photo's the DA87 might be a DA37, might explain the mix up in the register...
