Tom Petty Plays The 362

This video is one of the few times Tom actually played the 362. He acquired this one from Norm Harris in 1979 (which would be the first of many transactions between Tom and Norm over the next 30 years), and while Tom loved the sound, in 1985, he said that the guitar was too heavy for regular recording and performing use. Shortly after the Damn the Torpedoes tour of 1980, he picked up a 1967 360/12 in mapleglo, possibly to replace this guitar for 12-string use. That guitar was one of Tom's main recording and touring guitars until it was stolen in April 2012 from Sony Studios in Culver City, and quickly recovered.

The 362 is featured being played by Tom on the back cover of Hard Promises, during a rehearsal for the 1980 tour. The guitar was one of many instruments spotted at the Wildflowers sessions of 1992-94, and remains in Tom's collection.
