Great and well known songs containing Rickenbackers

Post by gibsonlp »

Hey guys.
A friend of mine has a weekly 1h radio show and he wanted to host me to talk about Rickenbackers.
I need to bring about 10 songs with me.
Would love to hear suggestions for good, well known songs with distinct Rickenbacker sound.
I have my own list but I am interested in hearing untainted opinion, thanks :)
So long and thanks for all the fish!

Are we talking guitars, basses, both, either/or?

Yes ;)

Seriously: Either would be good.
If you know of a song with a distinct guitar and bass sound - even better!

How about some Rare Blend?

This is a totally improvised jam from a gig in May 2008 (March '73 4001):

Another song, composed by the band, from the same gig (July '73 4001):

I'll send you more later.

Great and well known songs containing Rickenbackers

A few you might consider :D

Under the Milky Way, The Church
A Million Miles Away, The Plimsouls
Now, The Plimsouls
Susanna Hoffs and the Bangles ---- a bunch of their tunes
Needles and Pins, The Searchers
This Charming Man, The Smiths
Inside Out, The Mighty Lemon Drops
South Central Rain, R.E.M.
The Break Up Song, Greg Kihn Band
For You, Greg Kihn Band (Bruce Springsteen cover)
So You Want to be a Rock & Roll Star, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Surrender, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

And a very nice cover version of "If I Needed Someone" from Roger McGuinn's solo CD "Limited Edition" with his Rickenbacker playing three parts in some parts of the song. A fitting tribute to George Harrison.

Eurythmics : Thorn In My Side
Maybe it's not a RIC, the official video just shows an acoustic, but there is definetaly an electric as well. Didn't Dave Stewart used to play RICs ?

How about some tunes by The Jam - In the City, Going Underground, Start!, Pretty Green....

Paul Weller got some aggressive tones out of those 330s.... Bruce Foxton used a 4001 and a pick pre Sound Effects.

Great list, but.....

This Charming Man is Johnny playing John Porter's fifties Telecaster. Also, I think South Central Rain is PB playing Mitch Easter's Fender XII - happy to be corrected about this one if someone else knows better :)
